Chapter Nine

“We have some news, Mr Yeoman, Mrs… er… Yeoman?”

Janet had been at Tim’s bedside for almost half an hour when Dr Maclaren, identified by his badge as a junior medic, appeared.

Tim had recovered markedly overnight. He no longer needed help with his breathing, his colour was good, and if he appeared tired and drawn, it had more to do with lack of genuine sleep and a hangover from the drugs he had been given than any adverse effects of the previous night. But he found it difficult to speak, as a result of which, Janet did most of the talking bringing him up to date on overnight events between Lisa, herself and her son. Holding her hand, Tim had confined himself to occasional hoarse chuckles, and gestures, gripping her hand a little tighter or releasing his grip and patting her hand as sign of understanding and/or approval.

On Maclaren’s query regarding her relationship, she was hesitant. “It’s Mrs Baldock, actually. I’m Tim’s, er, partner.”

“Oh.” The doctor, dressed in standard, pale green, NHS overalls, stethoscope hanging loosely over his neck as if it were some kind of badge of authority, appeared slightly confused and consulted his notes. “We have Mr Yeoman’s next of kin as his daughter, Lisa.”

“Lisa won’t be here until this afternoon,” Janet replied.

“Just tell us, Doc,” Tim croaked. “Whatever you have to say, Janet is allowed to hear it.”

Maclaren shrugged. “Okay. We’ve identified the poison. Household drain cleaner.”

Answering for Tim, Janet tried to hide her surprise. “Oh. Well, that is odd. We weren’t at home when the incident occurred.”

“So I understand.” Maclaren consulted Tim’s notes once again. “Now, according to the reports, Mr Yeoman had swallowed some kind of Viagra substitute.”

Tim nodded and Janet confirmed verbally.

“That’s right. Fiagara. I bought it from a mutual friend. It’s perfectly safe. He’s taken it before.”

Maclaren smiled indulgently, and shook his head. “Judging from our analysis of his stomach contents, I’d have doubts about that. The pill appears to have no active ingredient, but it is the source of the drain cleaner.”

Janet was not about to be contradicted by a young man who probably had no need of any libidinous enhancement, genuine or otherwise. “That’s not possible. I just told you, he’s taken it before with no ill effects.”

Maclaren perched himself on the edge of Tim’s bed. “Mr Yeoman, Mrs Baldock, the problem with buying these alleged substitutes is you never know what they contain. The pills you’ve taken in the past may have been safe, although they won’t have had any effect, but what you have this time is the product of a bad batch. These small laboratories don’t operate to the same standards of hygiene as pharmaceutical companies. Don’t ask me how drain cleaner got in there, but it did. Fortunately—”

Janet interrupted. “Excuse me, Doctor, but no effect? They’ve helped Tim get it up in the past.”

Tim tried to protest, and Janet hastened to reassure him.

“I know we’re talking as if you’re not here, Tim, but you need to rest your voice and someone has to tell the doctor the tale.
