Four weeks later Gwen was still thinking about that kiss. They had stood for so long holding each other while he kissed her like she’d never been kissed before. Then he had cupped her face in both his hands and smiled at her, a dazzling smile that she saw every night since as she lay in bed thinking about him.

He was sleeping in the barn, giving her time to get used to the marriage. At least that is what he told her. But, she had asked him to come to the house and at least sleep on the settee in the parlor. He refused and mumbled something unintelligible. She had let it go since he scooted out the door back to his safe haven.

For the past four weeks they had been working side by side outside. He hadn’t allowed her to pick the weeds alone. The first day she had tried and barely put a dent in the yard. The next day he came along with her and began to work by her side. Before supper time, they had a quarter of the front yard cleared. By the end of the week the whole yard was weed free. Even the two days a week when Arthur went to work at the ranch, he still stopped in to check in on her. She found him an amazing man and such a hard worker.

They spent each evening having supper together, then they would retreat to the porch until the sun went down or go for a walk hand in hand along the property line. Arthur made her laugh at some of the things he told her about the horses he trained. There was one, a stallion he called him Henry, that he talked about quite often. Arthur planned to put him in a horse show someday if he ever had the chance.

“I think you’ll be a great horse breeder. This farm is going to grow so huge you won’t recognize it a few years from now.”

He gave her a faraway look. “That would be nice,” he told her.

She wanted to be a part of making his dreams come true but worried he wouldn’t allow her to go into town. It would be nice to speak with other people now and again. Gwen had an idea about purchasing enough supplies to begin selling some baked goods. But she had to get to the mercantile to see if there was any interest in buying them.

Whenever she asked Arthur to take her to town, he claimed to be too busy. She tried again. “Is it possible to take a ride into town one day this week? I’d like to purchase some things. I have some money of my own I brought along.”

He leaned over, his face close to hers. “Don’t you know when you marry you have to hand over all your money to the man of the house?”

“What? I never heard that rule! Is it even a rule?”

He grinned.

She laughed. “You had me worried. I thought you were serious.
