I blinked and stared up at the blue summer sky. A few puffs of white clouds were sailing across it, but otherwise it was empty. Then Lyra’s face appeared from somewhere above me.

“There you are,” she said with a smile before she stroked my cheek. “How are you feeling?”

I opened my mouth to say I felt like crap, before I realized I didn’t. My shoulder felt a little sore, but otherwise everything felt fine. “Uhm, OK, I think?”

Lyra’s smile grew from gentle to happy. “Do you think you can sit up?”

Without answering, I started sitting up. Lyra helped a little, making sure I didn’t fall over when I tried to use my right arm and found it tied to my torso. Finding my balance, I looked down to see I was wearing a plaid shirt. It was way too big, but it had to be so my right arm could stay tied beneath it. The sleeve was knotted up at the shoulder, so it wouldn’t be in the way, and the other sleeve had been rolled up so I could still use my left hand without it being drowned in fabric.

“Why’s my arm tied to my chest?” I asked and looked up at Lyra. “And how long was I… did I pass out?”

“So you won’t move it and risk re-dislocating your shoulder. And yes, but that’s normal. We’d just finished putting the shirt on, so you weren’t out long. The others are figuring out who should carry what. “

“So why doesn’t my shoulder hurt more? It just feels a little bruised.”

“According to Anton, once something dislocated is put back in place, it doesn’t hurt at all. If you’re feeling bruised, it’s probably an actual bruise you got during the accident.”

“Speaking of,” I said and turned toward the sound of voices. “How’s Bex?”

Lyra sighed and turned with me. “She won’t allow Anton to look at her, so we can just keep an eye on her for now. At least she agreed to have her head bandaged.”

As she said it, I saw Gramps and Bex sitting a little to the side of everyone. Bex was saying something as Gramps methodically tied a bandage around a heap of clothing, to keep it in place. There was still fresh blood covering part of Bex’s face and neck.

“How’s your stomach?”

Lyra’s question took me off guard and I turned back to her. “Fine. Why?”

“Anton told me to get you to eat and drink this before I let you stand.” She held out a bottle of water and a granola bar.

“I’m not hungry. You should eat it. You need it more than me.”

“Oh, no you don’t. I get enough of that from Patrick and Bex, even Ris. I couldn’t argue with them, but I can argue with you. You’re a kid, and you need energy to grow and prosper.” I opened my mouth to argue, but she spoke over me. “So you’re going to eat this granola bar, then drink at least half of this water bottle, before you stand, or I will tackle you back to the ground.
