Chapter Fourteen

A warm weight prevented Ginny from rolling over in her bed. Had that cat snuck into her room again? She tried to pull the blanket from underneath the animal while keeping her eyes firmly scrunched shut, clinging to sleep she swore she still needed. Her bed was so warm, so welcoming and would be absolutely perfect were it not for that...

“Hey!” the cat said when Ginny gave it a nudge with her foot.

Snapping her eyes open, Ginny met the gaze of a wild-haired child who looked all too like Pierce.

“You’re not a cat,” Ginny said, her voice croakier than anticipated.

“I’ve been watching you.” The child remained perched on the end of the bed.

“Uh...” Ginny shoved a strand of hair from her face, grimacing at how knotted and wiry it felt. “Thank you?”

The child smiled smugly. “I was making sure you didn’t die.”

“Well, I’m alive.” She glanced around the beautifully appointed room in tones of muted greens and golds. Landscapes in heavy gilded frames hung on the walls and the canopy above the bed matched the tall gleaming curtains still pulled shut. A thin sliver of light slipped in between the curtain, hinting at it being daytime.

Her head gave a pulse pain and she put a hand to it. “At least I think I’m alive.”

“My brother will be so relieved. He caused such a fuss last night when he brought you here, everyone in the house arose and I’m on the third floor near nanny.”

“Oh.”

Ginny felt her cheeks heat. She vaguely recalled the huge house, a few windows warm with lamplight beckoning her and Pierce toward it. Everything else after that was a bit of a blur. Had she really awoken Pierce’s entire family?

The child jumped down from the bed and came directly to Ginny’s side then put a tiny hand across her forehead. Ginny remained frozen, watching the furrow of concentration cross the pretty girl’s face.

“I don’t think you have a temperature. I suspect you’ll live.”

“I’m sorry I awoke you last night.”

“Oh I’m not!” She grinned. “It was the most exciting thing to happen here since all the hens escaped and ran all over Mama’s ornamental garden.” She removed her hand from Ginny’s forehead and rocked back onto her heels. “Why were you out in the weather last night?”

“I was...” Ginny sighed. It was all foolish and stupid and she heartily regretted it, especially now she had landed in Pierce’s family home. “Well, I was trying to decipher a map.”

“In the dark?”

“It’s a map of the stars.”

“Ohhh. You are helping Pierce, are you not?”

Ginny nodded. “At least I was meant to be.” Him ignoring her for a day still stung and she doubted she had proved to him he needed her after last night.

“When did you meet my brother? Was it in Egypt?” The girl shook her head. “No, you don’t look like you were in the sun. Are you from Norway?”

“I’m from England,” Ginny clarified, unable to resist a slight smile. “I met him at the village inn.”

“Why does he need your help?”

“I’m rather fond of history and I know the area better than him.
