Chapter 17

Liekki pushed the few stray strands of her hair out of her face. She stood near the falls on the edge of the cliff as the water thundered down into the ocean far below. The sun was setting and painted the sky in oranges and reds, softly lighting the land beneath in a warm glow. A gentle breeze blew across the way and brought with it the fresh scent of the salted air of the Caspeson ocean. It was their last day in Ravenfalls and Liekki had enjoyed herself entirely too much. She was fortunate to take it all in and experience everything there was to offer.

Exploring the food markets was one of her favorite things to do. She sampled new foods from all the different cultures she had become familiar with during her stay. In one of the many parks around Ravenfalls, Liekki was able to shift into her true four legged form and played with a few young vulpiian kits she saw. The things she had the opportunity to do were fun for her and was a much needed respite, considering everything she had been going through. Surprisingly, Efrim was the perfect city guide, and there was no way she could thank him enough.

“Where to now?” Liekki asked.

The time had gone by in the blink of an eye, and Liekki had nearly forgotten about the trials. Instead, her mind was seared with the memory of her father’s rage and the clans uniting as they marched through the valley. Their voices raised and hands clutching blazing torches. That was the one thing she didn’t think she could ever forget. That they were hunting her. Although there were a few times that she and Efrim had come extremely close to being found out and caught by bounty hunters. Luckily for them, Efrim’s magic held up. The glamour did its job, and sure enough, it kept her hidden. The ickiness and wrongness she would feel whenever a flayer was nearby, she didn’t feel anymore.

The screeching of the white feathered and yellow beaked sea birds pierced the silence. Liekki peered over her shoulder to see if Efrim heard her. All she saw was his profile. His inky black wind swept hair fell down to his shoulders. Efrim’s gaze was pinned forward and his expression was lost, deep in contemplation.

“Is everything okay?” she asked. He had been unusually quiet, and she didn’t know why. Which was odd for him.

He looked at her and rubbed a hand over his chin. “Everything is fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Very.” He cleared his throat. “We should consider departing this place. Aren't you due to report to Elderton soon?”

He made an excellent point and was very right. She had to find her way to Elderton even if she didn’t want to do it. Ever since she left home, the days passed by in a blur. Now the fun was ending, and the craziness was about to begin. Was she ready? She wouldn’t know until she stepped foot into Elderton. “Yes.
