DECLAN COULDN’T HELP but smile at Melissa’s expression. She was trying her hardest to look annoyed, but the excitement in her eyes gave her away.

She said curtly, “This isn’t fair. When you said you were taking me out for a pizza, I didn’t expect this.” She jerked her thumb to the window at her side.

Declan shrugged. “Where else would we go for a pizza?”

“There are many perfectly good restaurants near me.” The annoyed tone in her voice was fading by the second, and she couldn’t stop glancing at the view beyond the window.

He opened his arms wide as if it were self-explanatory. “But the very best pizza can only be found in Italy. And it doesn’t take any time at all to get to Rome.”

She snorted. “Yeah, if you got a private jet, it doesn’t take any time at all!”

He feigned a hurt expression and placed a hand on his chest. “Don’t you like this jet?”

Melissa’s eyes widened. “Of course I like this jet! It’s amazing. I was impressed with the limo, but this is beyond anything I could ever have imagined.” She finally broke into a smile and looked around her in renewed amazement. “I’m having the best time of my life! A private jet! Can I take some photos of it later to show Yasmin? I won’t show anyone else. Maybe Mum and Dad. But no one else.”

“Of course you can. Are you still mad at me for whisking you away like this?”

She cast him a soft smile. “How can I be mad at you? This is so thoughtful and kind of you. It’s a good job I had my passport with me.”

“If you hadn’t, I would have taken you home to collect it. I hope you don’t think I’m showing off and trying to impress you with my money.”

She arched one eyebrow. “Aren’t you?”

He grinned. “A little. But I wanted to take your mind off you-know-who. I didn’t like seeing you so upset.”

“Just because you’re taking me to Rome in your private jet doesn’t mean I’m going to change my mind about the comic convention.”

“I know. We can talk about that later.” He pointed to the window. “Look, we’re getting closer. You can see the Coliseum down there.”

“No way!” Melissa’s head whipped around and she pressed her face against the window. “I can see it! It’s there! Wow! I’ve only ever seen it on the TV.”

Declan moved closer to her and pointed to something else. “That’s St Peter’s Basilica in the distance. Can you see the dome? It’s in the Vatican City. I could take you there another time.” He stopped talking. He shouldn’t have said that. He was making assumptions about them spending more time together in the future. Although, the thought of that did warm his heart.

Melissa gasped. “You’ve got to be kidding me! Can we see the pope too?”

“Not from up here. But I know he’s in Rome at the moment. If you really want to see him, I could try to arrange something. I’ve heard a rumour that my books are popular in some parts of the Vatican.
