CHAPTER FIFTEEN

I sat there, stunned, barely hearing Mandy’s next words. Was there any way Selene’s DNA could be on that T-shirt? Could it possibly be hers?

“Do you see my situation, Athena?” Mandy asked. “On one hand, I know what a sweet person Selene can be. But if she went to Brady’s apartment to ask him to call off our wedding, you can figure out for yourself how she might have ended up with blood on her T-shirt.”

I gazed at her skeptically. “Do you actually think Selene stabbed Brady because he wouldn’t call off your wedding?”

“Yes, Athena. That’s what I think.”

“Mandy, Selene didn’t have an affair with Brady. I’m sorry to say this, but she didn’t like him. And she wouldn’t have asked him to call off the wedding. She was happy for you. Please believe that.”

“That was the conclusion I’d reached before we had the rehearsal dinner, but then . . .” She sat back. “Truthfully, I don’t know what to think now.”

I had to count to ten in my head so I wouldn’t get angrier. Case used the opportunity to ask a very important question, one that I hadn’t even thought to ask.

“Do you know who placed the phone call to the police?” When Mandy didn’t immediately respond, he rephrased it. “The groomsmen said the police showed up at Brady’s apartment right after they did. Do you know who called them?”

“I don’t know. It was all such a blur.”

“Mandy,” I said, “you’ve known Selene for a very long time. Just think back to everything you remember about my sister. I promise you won’t find anything in her background that would ever make you believe she could kill anyone.”

Mandy studied her nails again, clearly unconvinced.

Case picked up the questioning. “What do you remember about leaving the hair salon last Thursday?”

She paused to think, her eyes closing as though it helped her remember. “I was the last to finish,” she said. “Selene had already gone to lunch, so I didn’t say good-bye to her. I left the salon and went down the street to have lunch with my bridesmaids.”

“Did you see anyone go near Selene’s station while Selene was gone?” Case asked. “That would include any of your bridesmaids, a stranger, one of the other stylists . . .”

“No, and I wasn’t that far away. I think I would’ve noticed someone holding her scissors.”

“Was your vision ever blocked while you were getting your pedicure?” he asked.

“Well”—she paused to think—“there are always people passing by. And sometimes my nail tech was right in front of me.”

“So your answer is yes,” Case said.

Mandy gave a reluctant nod.

“Do you know who Nora Modelle is?” he asked.

Mandy’s nose wrinkled with distaste as she set her teacup down in the saucer with a sharp clink. “Don’t repeat that name. I hate her.” She stood up and walked to the serving station, poured herself another cup of tea, and sat back down again.

“Did you see her that day in the nail salon?” Case asked.

Mandy crossed one leg over the other and swung her foot angrily.
