The next day, I felt like shit when I woke up. Fuck, I thought. My nap yesterday had helped; I had felt perfectly fine when I woke up and had even managed to finish my coffee. But now, the same nausea was back. And worst of all, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my typical morning cup.

As I took a shower and got dressed, I realized that it was so bad that I wouldn’t be able to function at 100% for work. As much as I felt bad for leaving the team during such a hectic time, I had to take care of myself. It would suck if I ignored this problem and it became worse later.

I decided to call in sick and find a doctor. I didn’t have a GP yet, unfortunately, so I had to just go to the ER. If BHS had finished its clinics, I would have gone to one of those. They were useful, after all, I thought.

It was a slog to get out of the house because I kept flip-flopping on whether I should eat something or not. As soon as I picked something, a wave of nausea prevented me from wanting it. I eventually managed to stuff down two plain pieces of white bread, which didn’t completely repulse me. I cursed myself for stocking only sugary children’s cereals—I saw them, now, for what they really were: gross.

The nearest ER was a mile away, and it had become overcast and windy again. Just my luck, I thought. I didn’t want to shell out money to take a cab for just a mile, but I did it, because the thought of making that trek in my condition was unappealing. I took out my phone and called one up, shivering on the corner while waiting for it to arrive.

When I got to the ER, I was glad to see that there weren’t many people in the waiting room. They would be able to see me soon, and I’d be able to get back home soon, and then go in to work. Darren had been nice about me taking a sick day, but he hadn’t sounded happy, and I didn’t blame him. I was quickly becoming indispensable in this project.

“Noah?” called a nurse, poking her head out from behind a door. I followed her down a corridor while other nurses and doctors bustled about. The emergency wing was a busy place, even though it was a quiet morning.

“What brings you here today?” she asked, as soon as we had settled in an examination room. The equipment all around me made me feel jittery, like I had a more serious problem than just being nauseous. It wasn’t like the cozy little clinics I had gotten used to going to in Roxburgh.

“I’ve been pretty nauseous and I can’t think of a reason,” I said. “I didn’t eat any bad food and I don’t have any other symptoms of illness.

“Hmm,” she said, turning to the computer. “Let’s just take down some information and then we’ll get you sorted out.
