A Published Novelist

It would be some months before Jonah's Gourd Vine would be published. Soon, the $200 advance was spent, so Hurston needed to find a way to support herself. She organized some song, dance, and folklore performances and sought a Guggenheim Fellowship to continue her anthropology research. None of these efforts panned out. The theatrical productions were stressful and paid poorly. Her fellowship application was rejected. She worked for a time as a dramatist at Bethune-Cookman College, in Daytona Beach, Florida, but found the experience a disappointing one.

Prior to the May 1934 publication of Jonah's Gourd Vine, Lippincott offered to publish Mules and Men, Hurston's folklore collection, as well. Now settled in Longwood, Florida, Hurston set to work on revising the manuscript. Following the release of Jonah's Gourd Vine, the reviews started coming in. The white press responded favorably for the most part, praising her use of language. African-American publications were not so complimentary.
