Chapter Fourteen

Kendryck left Tynley before dawn, well before the upstairs maid came around to light the fires. His departure early would not stop the staff from gossiping about his presence in Tynley’s rooms all night long. An hour would not matter. He knew what had happened there. Nothing. And everything. She had lain down in his arms, and they had held each other and slept. The hours had brought him oblivion. It was the best night’s sleep he’d had in weeks. Perhaps in years.

Leaving his valet to complete packing for his wedding trip, Kendryck took the stairs at a jog. Carter was ready, standing at the breakfast room door to the kitchen.

“I’ll eat now, Carter. Quickly, please. Whatever Cook has ready.”

“She anticipated you’d be up early, sir.” The butler set a plate of eggs and creamed potatoes before him a minute later.

“I imagine you’ve had word of the doings last night.”

Carter continued his duties. “I have, sir. Conway was down early this morning to tell me. He has gone to bed, sir, as you instructed. Peters, too.”

“They are good lads, Carter. I appreciated their help last night.”

“I understand, sir.”

“Tell me, Carter.” Kendryck toyed with his coffee cup. “Have you had any challenges with Lucy?”

Nervous, the man wiggled in his dark serge, and his bushy brows rose high. “Occasionally, yes, sir.”

“Such as?”

“She complains, sir.”

“About her work?”

“About the baroness.”

“I see. And have you been inspecting her work, Carter?”

“Not regularly, no, sir. I am remiss.”

“And is there a reason for that?”

He locked his pale blue eyes on Kendryck. “His lordship, your brother, sir, said Lucy did a good service to the baroness, and I never questioned him.”

“And since my brother has passed away, how have you gone on?”

“I relied on Mrs. Hollens. She told me the baroness was being well taken care of by Lucy and by she herself, sir. She said she loved the lady.”

Kendryck swallowed his fury. Love had never been the attitude of Madeline toward his grandmother. “Carter, you realize this is not true.”

The fellow shook with his dismay. “I do, sir. Now I do.”

“I expect better from you, Carter. From Lucy, too. Most of all, I expect more from myself, as I should have known. I should have perceived the conflicts there.” Now because of my grandmother’s lack of acuity, I cannot say if her accusations against Madeline are real or fantasy. “I want you to do daily inspections. Impromptu. When my wife and I return, I will begin the same myself. But you are not to notify any of the staff.”

“No, sir. All mum, sir.”

“In the next few weeks while I am gone, I expect all of you to work up to my expectations. In regard to Lucy, especially, if she is not treating my grandmother with all the courtesy and respect she so deserves, you will sack the woman on the spot.”

The butler colored a deep shade of pink. “I agree, sir. It will be done.”

“I would hate for any other of the staff to be dismissed. But if necessary, I will do it.
