Captain Müller wrote a letter to Colonel Hecker on July 29, 1864, but, unfortunately, the missive did not reach the colonel or was lost after he received it. It is known that this missive contained information about the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20. The battle took place soon after the Twentieth Corps and Newtonâs division of the Fourth Corps crossed Peachtree Creek, three miles north of Atlanta. Hoodâs attack focused mainly on the Twentieth Corps, and, in intense fighting, his Rebels suffered 4,800 casualties and a bloody repulse. Union losses were 1,700. The 82nd Illinois had one officer and nine men killed and 37 men wounded.33 On July 22, Hoodâs army attacked McPhersonâs Army of the Tennessee east of Atlanta. Hoodâs soldiers fought hard but were defeated again. In this battle, known as the Battle of Atlanta, the Union suffered 3,722 casualties, including army commander Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson, who was killed. The Confederates incurred 3,300 to 3,800 casualties. Sherman appointed Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard, the Fourth Corps commander, to replace McPherson as head of the Army of the Tennessee. Offended because he did not receive the army command, General Hooker, who was senior in rank to Howard, asked to be relieved of his command. General Williams temporarily commanded the Twentieth Corps (July 27âAugust 25), until Maj. Gen. Henry W. Slocum arrived from Vicksburg to assume command. Col. James S. Robinson asked to be relieved of his brigade command on July 24 due to severe illness and Col. Horace Broughton, 143rd New York, replaced him as commander.34
