Death of a Grandparent

The loss of a grandparent is difficult for most children, but a child who is grieving other losses may experience an intensely painful grief response. Some strategies to address this trigger include:

Allow the child to have closure and receive a “good-bye” blessing from the grandparent, if possible.

Ensure the child has accurate information about why the grandparent has died.

Empathize with feelings of loss.

Assure the child that other family members will continue to nurture him, and they are safe and well.

Help the child write a letter, draw a picture, compose music or poetry that commemorates the importance of the relationship.

Frame a picture of the child with the grandparent for his room, or help child make a collage of pictures.
