Lacey had reason to remember what she’d said about the silly trappings of a couple in love the next morning when she came down to breakfast and found a single, deep crimson rose waiting by her plate. She recalled it again the morning after that when the rose was a slighter paler red. And the day after that, when it was a dark pink one.

“I didn’t know a young man in love still did this sort of thing,” Ginny said on the fourth day, when the florist brought a flower of such a delicate powder pink that it seemed to have been plucked from a sunset and not from a bush at all. “Tomorrow it should be cream-colored, and on your wedding day, it’s supposed to be a pure white one without even a trace of color.”

“I’m sure it will be, Mother.” Lacey buried her face in the Metropolitan section of the newspaper. A young man in love, she thought in disgust. A young man putting on a good show for her parents and at the same time making sure that Lacey herself knew precisely how false each tiny, thoughtful gesture was – that was more like the truth.

“And you’re not even wearing your ring,” Ginny exclaimed. “That beautiful ring, dear...”

If I thought I could get away with it, Lacey thought, I’d drop that beautiful ring down the bathtub drain. “I’m not even dressed yet, Mother. Of course I’m not wearing it.”

“I even slept with my engagement ring on, dear. Let’s go shopping, Lacey. You’ve been so busy at the hotel there hasn’t been time, but since it’s Saturday...”

“Shopping for what, Mother?”

“I know he’s got the apartment all ready, but surely you’d like some new underthings at least? And even if you aren’t going to have bridesmaids and parties, we could have lunch at Felicity’s. Just the two of us. That’s always been a special treat.”

And because it was easier to give in than it was to explain what Ginny would regard as the insane phenomenon of a bride who didn’t want to shop, Lacey went upstairs and got dressed and put on what she had come to think of as That Ring.

It was beautiful, she had to grant. It was splashy, it was stunning, and it absolutely shimmered. The central brilliant-cut diamond and the surrounding swirl of tapered baguettes caught and shattered even the dimmest light into a glittering rainbow. It was the kind of ring a girl pictured when she dreamed of her young man slipping it on to her finger with words of love.

Instead, Lacey’s ring had been delivered by a uniformed special messenger from the jewelry shop, who insisted that she sign a receipt.

Oh, yes, she thought, Damon was determined that she didn’t forget that this wasn’t really going to be a marriage at all.
