It was the sound of dishes rattling around in the kitchen that woke me the next morning. I sat up in bed and turned to find Ethan still seated in the chair from the night before.

“You stayed all night

“That was what I promised,” he said.

I studied him. He looked tired, almost fatigued. There were no obvious signs of sleep deprivation. His eyes weren’t bloodshot and the skin beneath didn’t appear dark or lined. It was more that he was weary in spirit.

He’s nothing but spirit, idiot. Nothing else could be weary.

“Can you sleep?” I asked Ethan.

“Not the way you can.” His gray eyes focused on me. “Though I must return to the convergence to recharge myself from time to time. The longer I stay here, the more psychic energy I use and the greater my need to refill my strength.”

I remembered Maeve saying something about Ethan being gone and coming back. An awful thought occurred to me. “You usually go back at night, don’t you?”

“Jess likes privacy when the sheriff is here.”

And I had kept him by my side all night. “You should go now.”

“You wish me to leave?” He sounded almost hurt.

No, I didn’t. I wished I could cling to him because he made me feel safe. But I couldn’t, not if keeping him by my side drained him this much. “I want you to take care of yourself in whatever way you need to. So that I can read to you again tonight. The way I promised.”

He caressed my face. A jolt of pleasure ran through me at the tender caress. I wanted to kiss him, to hold him.

Those stormy gray eyes were filled with yearning. I took his hand in mine and pressed my lips to his knuckles. “Go. I’ll be fine.”

He nodded and a moment later, he vanished.

The girls were awake. Alys and Maeve were already dressed. Sibby was naked though, having shed her diaper and nightgown. Her tiny buttocks jiggled as she streaked through the room.

“Sibby wet the bed,” Maeve informed me.

“Then I guess we’re doing laundry today,” I smiled at her while snagging my little nudist and taking her into the bathroom for a quick rinse. Alys was already stripping the linens from the mattress when I returned to diaper and dress Sibby.

“You girls probably need clean clothes anyhow.” I eyeballed the pile of dirty garments on the floor. Definitely laundry day.

After bundling the soiled linens, I herded the girls and their sacks full of dirty clothes downstairs for breakfast. Jess was sitting on the front porch, a mug of coffee cradled in her hands. She was still wearing the same dress she’d had on the night before.

“Good night?” I poked my head out the doorway to ask her.

“It always is, for true.” She winked at me and I laughed. I loved Jess’s attitude. She was a businesswoman and felt no need to shove herself into traditional female roles, like wife or mother. She was carving her own way through life and living it on her terms.
