Chapter Eighteen
I spent two more days at my momâs. For her sake, not mine. She didnât take the fake-death part of my story so well, and I couldnât leave until she was convinced I would take every precaution not to get tangled in a huge scandal or end up hurt.
Mason, or Marus, or whatever heâs called now, has extended family living in Scotland, but his sister is in Manhattan, and he has a cousin not too far from my house, about an hour away. Iâm going to give the thrift store woman one more try, and if I donât get a hold of her, then Iâm going to see Rebecca. Last resort is the cousin. Bottom line, I need to find Mr. Wish. I need to talk to him and find out the truth. Whyâs he doing all this wish stuff? Whyâd he fake his death? Where does all his money come from?
The entire flight home, my leg is bouncing and my thumbnail is shoved between my teeth, being nibbled to a stump. I canât come close to explaining how I feel. Thereâs a dark magic in the air. Anything is possible. Tragedy. A fairy tale. A story of violence and greed where family members stab each other in the back so many times that everyone is left in permanent survival mode, a real-life version of that HBO show Successionâmy second favorite behind West World (because, yeah, putting âpeopleâ back together). However, I know this isnât a TV show. This is real. My feelings. The facts. The risk. I really wish I knew where he was. I have to talk to him.
âCan I sit here?â says a deep, familiar voice just as weâre almost to the end of the flight.
I look up, up, up at the man standing in the aisle, wearing a snug black sweater that hugs his chiseled pecs, and worn jeans slung low on his narrow hips. âMason?â
He flashes a semi-startledâor maybe confused?âlook. Brows shrugged, eyes just a bit too wide. âNot sure who Mason is. Is he as good looking or rich as me?â
Uhhâ¦
âMay I?â He gestures toward the seat next to me.
I nod, dumfounded. âHow are you on this flight?â Two seconds ago, I was literally wishing I could talk to him.
âHorse ranch. Remember? I went to meet with the manager and staff. They were disappointed to hear you wouldnât be coming to live there.â
Howâs it possible there are so many coincidences with this man? âNot sure why theyâd be disappointed. I know nothing about horses or ranches.â I study his face and every featureâthe eyes, the lips, the shape of his jawâlooking for any sign of ghostly features. This is the first time Iâve seen him since I discovered his secret.
I witness only a live, beautiful man next to me. Just to be sure, I might have to poke him. Or kiss him?
âThe property has had five owners in the last decade. It needs someone whoâs committed to staying and making it into what it could be.
