Chapter Thirteen: Shane Carter

Shane walks up to Grant to wake up the others. This is the first night they have stopped to sleep in days. Grant wakes up on full alert. Phil and a few others start to stir.

“We need to try to make it for Idaho,” Shane tells him.

Grant rubs his face and releases a deep breath trying to wake up. “Yeah, I know. It’s Idaho, then Canada. Once we make it to Canada, we just need to find a place to hold up before their winter arrives. Hopefully, we can make it to the refugee camp before that. But at the rate we’re going, we’re not going to make it.”

Phil steps forward, making sure to keep his voice down. “We don’t even know if that place exists or where it is exactly. We just need to find us a place. Secure it. And wait ‘til winter ends to go looking for the camp. Grant’s right. We don’t want to get caught in their winters. The Kold-Bloods will be the least of our worries.”

“Y’all are missing the point. Melyssa and I are going to Robie Creek, Idaho to look for Amyna. I had a dream. And that’s where my son told us to go.”

All other eyes dart between each other in the dark.

Finally, Lloyd speaks his thoughts, holding his hands out. “Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Am I the only one that ain’t trying to pretend what’s going on? This guy’s son is dead. His daughter was taken. We all saw it. And we’re going to stand here and act like he’s sane?” He looks around at the group then back at Shane. “Man, I’m sorry. But you’re losing it and ain’t capable of making sound decisions anymore. I say we head straight to Canada. No more rest stops. Who’s with me?”

It’s silent among the group, surprising even Shane. “Look, I wasn’t asking for any of you to come along. And I sure as hell wasn’t asking for y’all’s permission. I just didn’t want you to wake up in the morning, wondering where in the hell we were, and go looking for us,” Shane tries to explain.

“You got that fucking right. There’s no way in hell I’m going to follow a man listening to his dead son to go look for his probably already or soon to be dead daughter.”

Shane stomps toward Lloyd with a fiery look in his eyes. His fist are balled tightly, and even in the dark, every enraged vein is visible. Grant steps in front of Shane, trying to calm the situation, but Shane rams his shoulder into Grant’s chest, sending him to the ground. Shane’s arm retracts then plunges forward too quickly for Lloyd to bolt out of the way in time. He knew it was coming. But the look in Shane’s eyes made his feet lock into place. Lloyd soars to the ground, landing on his side, his head thundering with pain from the blow. He tries to regain himself, trying to focus on what’s happening.
