It was a colossal mistake to have shown up Rol’s unannounced like this. Meryl pressed her lips together hard. Seeing him again was, well, it was a damn relief that he hadn’t caught the first ship home already, although he might still do that after he heard what she had to say. The need to see him faded into indecision in the reality of his imposing, and incredibly sexy, presence wearing nothing but his flying leathers and tight black pants. Leggings. Whatever they were called didn’t change the fact that she knew exactly what was inside them.

Stop it!

How was she going to get through this?

She worried her lower lip between her teeth. “Do you have a minute?”

“Of course. Your timing is perfect. Ms. Crawford was just leaving.”

Raven Crawford is here?

“Yep.” The young lady in question stepped around Rol, her ever-present camera bag slung over her shoulder, and a notebook in hand. “Leaving now. Nice to see ya, Ms. Faulkner. Thanks for the insight, Rol; I’ll check in with an update after tomorrow’s session.”

A kernel of suspicion wormed into Meryl’s heart as Raven bounced out. She had called him by his first name.

Like you have any claim on him.

She’d kicked him out of her house, for crying out loud.

Rol took a step closer. “You wish to speak to me?”

“Um, yeah.” She wished to do more than speak, but that wasn’t going to happen again. Especially once she told him the truth. “It turns out that I do owe you an explanation for last night after all.”

His dark gaze seemed to sharpen, but he shook his head. “You do not owe me anything, Meryl.”

If only his tone was harsh instead of understanding, it would make this a little easier. A little less hurtful.

“I do, actually.” She lowered her gaze to her clasped hands, then back to his face. “I used you as revenge against my ex last night, and I’m sorry.”

Pain flashed in those mysterious eyes, and he raised his chin a fraction of an inch.

She spread her hands in a pathetic silent attempt to plead understanding. “I thought I was beyond being so stupid, but I guess not.”

“What did he do?” His words came out in a low growl that send a shiver through her.

There was no way she was going to tell him that, so she gave her head a sharp shake, then swiped a strand of hair from her cheek.

He pressed his lips together in a flat line. “I see.”

She swallowed hard and nodded. The silence creeped in like a malicious disease, filling the room with its miasma. As much as she’d hoped her confession would help, the truth was, it was worthless without facts to back it up. Facts that were too personal to share with someone she’d known for such a short time.

Besides, he was a guy, and by definition untrustworthy.

She lowered her gaze, searching for something more forgiving than Rol’s hard expression to focus on.

“Well.” She made a shrugging motion with her hands. “I guess I’ll be going now.
