I clawed my way up the cliff of darkness, back to consciousness. My senses revved up in sequence, like some kind of nuclear reactor. There was an extraordinarily sterile odor in the air. It reminded me of surgical steel. The chill in the room made my skin pebble. I raised my head with the steadiness of a rickety drawbridge and found the will to open my eyes.

I jolted in the chair and cursed, “Holy fuck monkeys!”

″Such an artful string of words.” Sommer shot me a sarcastic grin. The petite blonde was a rogue angel; not fallen, but not heaven-blessed either.

We were in an interrogation room at the Lake Placid compound’s jail. They’d taken the liberty of restraining me to the chair.

″You make a habit out of staring at people while they sleep?” I asked.

Sommer kept her expression neutral as she folded her arms. “You were unconscious, not asleep.”

″Semantics.”

The conversation paused when the door opened. Loch and Ellie came in and took a seat. Loch sported a suit, but the leprechaun’s scarlet hair and beard still screamed wild child. Ellie looked like your stereotypical CIA spook. Her stony gaze erased any doubts I had about her. One wrong move, and she would happily use her elemental magic to shove bits of the wall in places I’d rather not have them.

Sommer continued. “The doctor assessed your injuries. Your magic mended bone fractures but seems to have slowed in handling your bruising. We assume this has something to do with your necrosis.”

″It’s not nice to make fun of someone’s handicap,” I replied.

Loch chuckled. “That shite is a right bit more than a fuckin’ handicap.”

Ellie leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table and smiling. “How’s your head?”

″Better.” I grinned. “Thanks for saving my life.”

″Fuck you,” Ellie spat.

″That’s fair.” I said, nodding. “Chaining me to the chair is overkill. Don’t you think?”

″Despite the room’s suppression field and the band on your wrist, you’re still a skilled combatant,” Sommer answered.

″I’m in a room with an angel, a leprechaun, and an elemental that wants to kill me. Let’s not forget the building of assault rifle-toting guards who also possess supernatural skills.”

″Reasonable measures to secure someone who claims to have killed Legion,” Sommer replied.

″Point taken.”

″I should’ve hit you with another brick,” Ellie grumbled.

″Missed opportunities,” I teased.

″Chase, I like you and empathize with your loss,” Sommer said.

″Straight to business then,” I said.

Sommer nodded and kept things moving. “You’re an escaped convict. Helping us put an end to Joy’s spree of terror would go a long way toward softening the repercussions you will face.”

″Where’s my uncle?” I asked.

″Excuse me?”

″You know? Tomas; tall guy, wide as Buick, bald, sexiest damn beard you’ve ever seen.” I flung more questions before either of them could answer. “Where’s Beelzebul? Joy? Coven of the Butterfly?”

″We are working diligently to find leads,” Sommer said, trying to save face.

″The answer to all of those questions is ’You don’t fucking know,’” I growled. “It’s pushing a year, and you can’t tell me anything I haven’t discovered in a few days.
