Chapter Six

Cooper took a long sip from the longneck bottle, fighting off the laugh. He covered his mouth with one hand while putting the bottle on the table with the other. Quickly swallowing, he shook his head at Nate. “Man, don’t joke when I’m trying to take a drink.”

“What? Don’t like beer through your nose?”

“At least it doesn’t sting as bad as soda,” Cooper said with a grin. He scooped up another forkful of spaghetti and shoved it in his mouth. “I’m kinda glad you forced me to eat. I was famished.”

“See, I knew what I was talking about,” Nate said before taking a chunk of garlic bread and popping it into his mouth. “And I have to say, this is likely the best meal I’ve ever made.”

“Don’t cook much?”

“No reason to. I rarely have guests,” Nate said before taking a drink from his own bottle. “And no point cooking for one.”

“What about family? I hear your daddy was sheriff before you.”

“And his daddy. And his daddy. It’s a long family tradition to be the sheriff of this county.”

“Sounds like a lot of weight on your shoulders,” Cooper said before taking another bite.

“Sometimes,” Nate said, his voice taking on a wistful sound. “But I like my job. I like helping people. I grew up watching both my father and grandfather doing this job, so you could say it was in my blood.”

“They still live here?”

“My mom and dad still live in town, and so does my sister. My two younger brothers both live in Austin, both cops.”

“Guess it is in the blood,” Cooper said.

“You have any other family, besides Pete?”

Cooper shook his head. “Not really. My cousin, Alan, who left on a bus a couple of days ago. Not sure you ever met him. He’d been living on the Circle J with us, doing Pete’s bidding. His mom, but she’s not my blood. That’s it.”

“That’s too bad.”

“Family doesn’t mean a whole lot to me,” Cooper answered, his jaw tight.

“I suppose not. But then, sometimes the family you make is better than any you were born to.”

Cooper’s gaze lifted to Nate’s. “Surrounded by the craziness I was, there weren’t too many opportunities to make one, either.”

“You’re going to get that chance. Now. It’s not too late.”

“Save the speeches. Let’s just worry about tomorrow,” Cooper said, growing uncomfortable with the conversation drifting into pity party territory. Dinner had been nice. They’d talked, they’d laughed, and they’d left all the BS out of it. Then Cooper had to bring up family and bring the conversation back to his shitty one. It was his own damned fault.

And he knew Nate was just trying to be the stand-up guy Cooper had heard the sheriff was. Cooper had seen hints of Dudley Do-Right from the first moments he’d laid eyes on the lawman. He’d also seen hints of the darker side to the man, when they’d been in bed together and Nate had spanked him roughly and nearly lost control.

Cooper liked that side a little more. It was closer to what he felt like inside and what he was used to.
