Chapter 9

Omelly Santana

“You always in Miami. That must be where your girlfriend resides,” my baby mama, Emoni, said after two minutes on the phone with her.

It was ten at night, and I knew my son was sleeping, but I called anyway to find out how the rest of Omari’s night had gone because she’d texted me around eight, letting me know he was running a light fever. I’d already called and checked in, but this was just me following up until I called tomorrow and checked on him again. My son was my world, and I didn’t play that shit when it came to him.

The relationship between Emoni and me might not have worked out, but we made sure that we showed healthy co-parenting in front of Omari. You would never see me opening my mouth to disrespect the mother of my child in front of my son… shit, you won’t see me open my mouth ever to disrespect the mother of my child in general because that was some sucka shit.

Emoni is someone who I was once deeply in love with. She carried my lil’ man for nine months and was sick her entire pregnancy. Emoni risked her fuckin’ body to bring me my beautiful son, so I wished like hell that I would open my mouth to ever disrespect her. Do we disagree about some shit from time to time and have to exchange words? Yeah, but that kind of shit was normal, and we knew how to work through that shit.

Whether I was with Emoni or not, I would always make sure that she and my son were good. Emoni made her own money working as a celebrity stylist, so she didn’t need shit from me, but the man in me had to make sure baby mama and son were good at all times.

“Who told you I got a girlfriend?” I asked, posted in my car, looking at the address on the house in front of me to make sure I was at the right spot.

I had the phone in my lap, with it on speaker. In a way, I was only half paying attention to Emoni because I was more focused on making sure I was at the right house. I was at Kelsey’s old home, the one she once lived in with that nigga. Tonight, I was doing something my ass should have done a couple months ago, but I was trying to keep the peace, and I didn’t want to get on Kelsey’s bad side, so I chilled. But it was only so much disrespect that a nigga would be able to take and not do shit about it.

I should have pulled up on that nigga last weekend when I had to hop on a flight in the middle of the night with my son. Kelsey hadn’t been responding to any of my text messages or phone calls, plus her ass hadn’t pulled up in New York, where I had been expecting her. I got to her house, only to see her limping around on a sprained ankle.
