I closed the front door when Mylah walked in. Her whole vibe was off, and I could feel it. She wasn’t her usual jolly self. It made my heart go out to her because I knew what she was going through. I had once been in her shoes, so I knew exactly how girlfriend felt. It made me feel bad, too, because I was thinking about inviting Kelsi, the woman that was carrying her man’s baby... The woman that had caused her pain.

“Hey, you want something to drink? I have wine. Water. Soda. Juice.”

“Nah, I’m good.” I felt she knew I knew about Kelsi, and now she was upset. I could tell by how dry she was talking, but I wasn’t going to come right out and address it. I first wanted to know how she was holding up.

Once we took a seat, I asked, “So, how have you been? I haven’t been seeing you in school. I know you text me that you were okay, but are you really, Mylah?” She dropped her head as she huffed out a deep breath. When she raised it back up and locked her eyes with me, she went, “Yeah, I know about the situation you were in, Nique, and it’s fucked up that you didn’t tell me Ta had gotten that bitch pregnant instead of ignoring me. And please don’t tell me you weren’t ignoring me because the same day that I finally caught up with you at school was the same day we found out she was pregnant. Then you tried to make it like I was tripping when I brought up the way you had been acting.”

I tried to speak, but no words came out. My head dropped, then I quickly raised it back up to lock eyes with her teary ones again. “Mylah, I was going to eventually tell you… I had to process the shit first. Then, I was trying to give Ta time to tell you.”

“No, you being my friend, you should’ve told me, but you didn’t because I guess you trying to be cool with her after all the shit her and her sister did to you.” She let out a chuckle. “Then you turned around and did the same shit to me. You ain’t no better than her!”

“Okay, Mylah, calm down…” I told her. Yes, I was a woman that had endured the same pain she was at the moment, but that didn’t change the fact that I wanted to give Kelsi the opportunity to tell Ta, and Ta the opportunity to tell Mylah. Regardless of if I had once been in her shoes or whatever, I wasn’t about to leave Kelsi and run straight to her, telling her without Ta even knowing. That would’ve been wrong of me. Not only that, but Ta had become more like a brother to me. I had known him longer than I’d known Mylah and was a lot closer to him for me to do something like that. “I should have told you, but I was waiting for Ta to.
