THEY SAT AND DRINK glasses of hot earl grey team with crème and samplings of iced raspberry tea. Along with the fluffy sandwiches and sweet crisp pies, Ally felt stuffed enough for a few days. She couldnât stop herself though from wondering how the tiny pies had perfect crispiness and pie filing to crush ratios. It had to be hard to pull something like that off when it was something so tiny.
âAlly, pleaseâhave some fun.â Lauren patted her hand.
âThis is fun. When you love your work as much as I do, itâs hard to let it all go.â
âIt is, after all, pie,â Elise said.
âAnd I feel like Iâm going to float away. So if youâll excuse me....â Daisy slowly rose up to her feet and supported her lower back as she made her way toward the bathroom. She tried to hide it but she had a very distinctive waddle, which couldnât be missed.
âSheâll never make it to the wedding day,â Lauren feared. âLook how low sheâs already carrying.â
Lana sipped her tea and turned her head. âA police escort to the hospital isnât out of the question.â
âItâs just two more days,â Ally said hopefully and her belly dropped into her toes from the excitement. âSheer force of willpower will keep that baby exactly where Daisy wants it to be.â
Elise and Lauren both burst out laughing but no one argued. No one who had met Daisy wouldâve been able to. She was a force of nature and someone never to be underestimated with. Still, childbirth mightâve been different.....
âIâm late! Iâm sorry!â A rush of footsteps through the front door stole Allyâs attention. It was Claire. She looked to have come straight from work in a pair of slender boot cut jeans, boots, and a button down shirt. Claireâs hair was always pinned back on the side and tonight was no different.
Ally rushed from the table to greet her. Originally, Allyâs feelings about Claire were mixed. She was the detective who had discovered the Sinclair link in the death of Hannah, Mitchâs first wife. It brought him closureâand pain. With the evidence pointing straight at Allyâs brother, Christopher it put Ally square in the middle.
Over time, her brother was cleared and Ally saw Claire for who she really was. Someone who fought for truth and justice. In reality, she had fought for Hannah and everyone who loved her. Claire was honorable and kind. It took Ally some reflection to finally reach that point.
âClaire!â Ally gave her a hug.
âIâm sorry I couldnât get away from work before now. Things have been a little hectic with the construction downtown and the block party flea market down central today.â
Ally smirked. âExciting.â
Claire raised her eyebrows. âYouâd think so, wouldnât you? Not everything can be life and death. For that, Iâm eternally grateful!â
âWell come eat and hang out with us. Thereâs going to be some sort of bridal game parties soon. Daisy insisted.â
Claire wrinkled up her nose. âUgh. I can arrest her if you want me to.â
Ally laughed. âI really wish you could but in her condition.
