THEY SAT AND DRINK glasses of hot earl grey team with crème and samplings of iced raspberry tea. Along with the fluffy sandwiches and sweet crisp pies, Ally felt stuffed enough for a few days. She couldn’t stop herself though from wondering how the tiny pies had perfect crispiness and pie filing to crush ratios. It had to be hard to pull something like that off when it was something so tiny.

“Ally, please—have some fun.” Lauren patted her hand.

“This is fun. When you love your work as much as I do, it’s hard to let it all go.”

“It is, after all, pie,” Elise said.

“And I feel like I’m going to float away. So if you’ll excuse me....” Daisy slowly rose up to her feet and supported her lower back as she made her way toward the bathroom. She tried to hide it but she had a very distinctive waddle, which couldn’t be missed.

“She’ll never make it to the wedding day,” Lauren feared. “Look how low she’s already carrying.”

Lana sipped her tea and turned her head. “A police escort to the hospital isn’t out of the question.”

“It’s just two more days,” Ally said hopefully and her belly dropped into her toes from the excitement. “Sheer force of willpower will keep that baby exactly where Daisy wants it to be.”

Elise and Lauren both burst out laughing but no one argued. No one who had met Daisy would’ve been able to. She was a force of nature and someone never to be underestimated with. Still, childbirth might’ve been different.....

“I’m late! I’m sorry!” A rush of footsteps through the front door stole Ally’s attention. It was Claire. She looked to have come straight from work in a pair of slender boot cut jeans, boots, and a button down shirt. Claire’s hair was always pinned back on the side and tonight was no different.

Ally rushed from the table to greet her. Originally, Ally’s feelings about Claire were mixed. She was the detective who had discovered the Sinclair link in the death of Hannah, Mitch’s first wife. It brought him closure—and pain. With the evidence pointing straight at Ally’s brother, Christopher it put Ally square in the middle.

Over time, her brother was cleared and Ally saw Claire for who she really was. Someone who fought for truth and justice. In reality, she had fought for Hannah and everyone who loved her. Claire was honorable and kind. It took Ally some reflection to finally reach that point.

“Claire!” Ally gave her a hug.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t get away from work before now. Things have been a little hectic with the construction downtown and the block party flea market down central today.”

Ally smirked. “Exciting.”

Claire raised her eyebrows. “You’d think so, wouldn’t you? Not everything can be life and death. For that, I’m eternally grateful!”

“Well come eat and hang out with us. There’s going to be some sort of bridal game parties soon. Daisy insisted.”

Claire wrinkled up her nose. “Ugh. I can arrest her if you want me to.”

Ally laughed. “I really wish you could but in her condition.
