CHAPTER ELEVEN

David scrawled the findings on the whiteboard. Visual cues would enable him to consider what had so far come to light and assist in examining connections and planning the next steps.

“Too many threads,” he muttered, drawing yet another line and adding notes. “Liv came to us via the hospital. Was she a plant that they hoped would give us false information? To keep tabs on our understanding of the situation,” he said, examining the notes he’d scrawled. “She promises to give us information, leads us to the spot in Eastcliffe where we find a nest. Helps us find Olante who gives us the nursery.”

“I don’t think that was what they planned. Look at how unprepared they were. They didn’t expect us to crack him so fast or so easily.” Erin pointed to the linkage. “It just doesn’t make sense to lead us to their most important facilities.”

“But they found us quickly. At the site,” he countered.

“True, but I think that was more because she tipped them off, rather than dropping too many details for us to find them. Of greater concern is that we accepted her word so readily. What gave her the believability factor that we accepted everything she said without determining her honesty? Was it arrogance on our part? A lack of understanding of the enemy we faced?”

“Okay, so we were too quick to release her. We’ve learned our lesson there.” David moved to the carafe and poured another coffee, the third so far this morning. It seemed like something was going to happen, and he hated not knowing what or where.

“Sorrington clearly knew we were heading down to talk to Celeste. He had her on the yacht, and when she made contact, she said there was more information. Has she spoken to you about that yet?” Erin waited, tension crackling in the air.

David closed his eyes, considering her question. “I planned to see Michael this morning about talking to her. You said you kept it light?”

“He wouldn’t let me interrogate her, so I just focused on making sure she knew she was safe and healing and gathering social intel, I believe it’s called.”

David laughed at the disgust coloring her tone.

“I didn’t think antagonizing Michael was wise,” Erin added.

David nodded. “Then we need to see her this morning. Find out exactly what she does know about the plot and see if that clarifies anything.”

“At the same time, even though we know there is no Eliana, I think we should continue investigating to see if there are accounts in this name also. It would certainly allow them to channel funds, and yet, although the last name is the same, PolSearch wouldn’t detect it as the privacy regulations—”

“Because they don’t allow us to connect them together as it’s a breach of their privacy.”

“David, this could be the break we’re looking for. We need something, and the populace is growing restless. The children have gone to ground in the last week, and I’ve got a feeling something big is brewing. Something we’re all going to find hard to cope with.
