Chapter 22

If it wasn’t one thing, it was another. Ruby was so tired of dealing with one storm after the next. Seemed like the minute she opened her eyes, something else would hit her. But she had a trick for them tonight. She wasn’t going to close her eyes. That way she wouldn’t wake up to any more bad news. She’d already be awake and ready for whatever the day was about to throw at her.

The nurse came in and checked her temperature, then another tech came into the room and pricked her finger to check her blood sugar. Why couldn’t they just leave her be? Wasn’t it enough that she had to endure surgery in the morning? A surgery that she wouldn’t even be contemplating if not for her kids.

Despite her protest, her eyes were drooping. Ruby picked up the remote and started channel surfing. House Hunters; Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives; Discovery Channel. She was just about to click the button to accept an animated movie that was a redo of Michael Jordan’s old movie with Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and the crew when there was a knock at her door.

Ruby wanted to throw the remote at the intruder. How many times did these people need to poke and prod? Exactly the reason she didn’t like doctors or hospitals. Ruby refused to say, “Come in,” choosing rather to wait and see how long the intruder would stand at her door waiting on an invitation.

Within seconds, she watched as the door slowly creaked open and Pastor O’Dell peeked inside. “Are you decent in there?”

“Hahaha. So you done gave up preaching to become a comedian now?”

Pastor O’Dell took his hat off as he stepped into the room. He had a Bible in one hand and his hat in the other. “I never thought of a career as a comedian. You think I need to give it a shot?”

Pursing her lips as she stared at him, Ruby said, “I think you’re too old to be changing careers. If you’re tired of God, you’re in a pickle because I don’t think no other profession would have you.”

“You might be right about that, Ruby.” He sat down in the chair to the left of her bed.

“As right as rain, and you know it.”

O’Dell and Henry had been the best of friends growing up. She and Henry started attending his church right after they jumped the broom. O’Dell was a good man and had always held a shine in hers and Henry’s eyes. But Ruby had questions about several things that O’Dell couldn’t answer, like why God had shut her womb for so long—until her husband had to find another woman to give him a baby. And why God had allowed Henry to die so young, without enjoying the fruits of his labor, and why, oh why God had allowed her baby girl to go out of the house during that awful storm and never return to her.

God giveth and God taketh away was not good enough for her.
