Chapter 23

Greg

I’d waited a week. I wasn’t going to wait anymore. Angelina hadn’t called me to tell me about the pregnancy. I blew my horn and startled the woman in the minivan in front of me. I wasn’t usually this impatient, but I had had enough of this game my wife was playing with our future. My nerves weren’t going to hold out much longer, so she and I were going to talk tonight.

I pulled onto her street, and from where I was I could see her car was not in the driveway. I slammed a fist on the steering wheel. It was almost seven o’clock. Where was she? Didn’t she have to put Katrice to bed?

I came to a stop in front of the house. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw an SUV like the one I’d gotten for her turn the corner at the end of the block. I pulled out, gunned the gas a little, and followed. Once I turned the corner, I could see her and the little gold sticker from the car dealer on the temporary tag. It was her. I reached for my phone and pressed the speed dial for her number, but she didn’t pick up. She never even moved her head side to side the way people do when they hear a phone ring or decide to check it. I could see that her hands were also on the steering wheel, so she wasn’t fumbling for it. Angelina was famous for forgetting to take her phone off of vibrate.

I followed her for a few more miles on a pretty busy four-lane road. Was I stalking? Where was she going? What if she had a date or something? I was tripping. I sped up until my car was alongside of hers. I could see Katrice strapped in the back playing with her dolls. We came to a red light, and I tapped my horn. She looked over. She was surprised at first, and then she frowned. I put my window down and told her to do the same.

“Greg, what are you doing?”

“Following you,” I replied.

She guffawed. “Really now?”

“No, not really. I saw you pull off from the house. I was trying to catch you.”

“I have church. It’s Bible Study night.”

I infused desperation into my voice. “I need to talk to you.”

Angelina bit down on her lip like she was reflecting on something and said, “I need to talk to you too, but I’m not missing church.”

“Okay, can I come after?”

She hesitated for a moment, and then frowned. “I suppose. Nine should be okay if it’s that urgent.”

“It is. I’ll meet you at nine.” I had to fight to keep from pumping my fist.

She put her window up and pulled off. I could see her turn into a small church about a half mile down the street.

I decided to kill time by having dinner. I looked around for an eatery, but really didn’t know where I was. I pulled out my phone and sought out a diner or Waffle House, but neither was particularly close.
