The Best Principal Ever!!!
Mrs. Jewls went from desk to desk, handing back everyoneâs history homework. âNice job, Eric,â she said to one of the Erics. âWell done, Eric,â she said to another. âYou better study the history of cabbage,â she told the third Eric. âThe Ultimate Test is coming.â
The third Eric, naturally, was Eric Ovens. He thought he knew all about the history of cabbage, and felt bad when he saw his homework grade. Then he realized that Mrs. Jewls had given him Eric Baconâs paper by mistake.
It turned out Eric Bacon had Eric Fryâs homework, and Eric Fry had his.
They switched papers.
Mrs. Jewls moved on. âNice job, Deedee, although your paper smelled somewhat strange.â
She stopped at Jasonâs desk and shook her head. âI was very disappointed, Jason.â
âSorry,â Jason muttered. He could barely hold his head up. âI was up all night reading.â
âHeâll never finish his book, Mrs. Jewls,â said Allison.
Suddenly, the classroom door swung open and banged against the wall. Everyone turned to see Mr. Kidswatter.
âGood morning, children,â he said.
They stared at him. He had never been inside their classroom before.
Mr. Kidswatter loudly cleared his throat. âI said, âGood morning, children . . .ââ
Mrs. Jewls hurried to the front of the room. She waved her hands like an orchestra conductor.
âGood morning, Mr. Kidswatter,â the children said in unison.
The principal smiled. âWhatâs all this?â he asked, pointing to the twenty-seven plastic containers stacked against the wall.
âToenails,â said Paul.
âAlso fingernails,â added Leslie so the principal wouldnât think the class was weird.
âWell, Iâm glad to see youâre doing important work here,â said Mr. Kidswatter.
âWould you like to donate a toenail, or maybe a fingernail?â asked Mrs. Jewls.
Mr. Kidswatter curled his fingers as he examined his nails. âNo, Iâm still using mine. Anyway, thatâs not why Iâm here. Iâm looking for a student to bang the gong on Friday. I figured Iâd start at the top, and work my way down, until I found someone willing toââ
Every arm shot up in the air. Calls of âPick meâ and âOoh, oohâ could be heard from around the room.
âOh,â said Mr. Kidswatter. âI guess it wonât take as long as I thought.â
âMe, me,â begged Bebe, stretching her arm high.
âNo, me, me!â urged Deedee.
It was impossible to know where Mr. Kidswatter was looking. He wore mirrored sunglasses, even indoors.
Joy had both hands raised, doubling her chances of being picked. âYouâre the best principal ever!!!â she called out.
Mr. Kidswatterâs head turned. âYOU!!!â he boomed, pointing his finger.
Everybody groaned, except for the one person he had chosen.
âMe?â Stephen asked meekly.
âYou?â asked Mr. Kidswatter, sounding somewhat surprised. âYes, you!â he declared. âI chose you, didnât I? And I donât make mistakes!â
He strode toward Stephen, then placed his big hands on both sides of Stephenâs desk and leaned over. âBe in my office on Friday, at two minutes before three oâclock!â he ordered. âYou will get one, and only one, swing of the mallet, so you better not miss! You must hit the very center of the gong, at exactly three oâclock.
