Chapter Six.

“Are you freaking kidding me?” Melisandre gasped. Nicholas had avoided her for an entire week, staying in his office as people came and went. The Lords were planning something, but she’d no idea what. She’d spent the week checking the team following her plans and restoring Waverley Hall’s grandeur using correct materials. The rest of the week, including days off and many late nights, had been researching quality furniture.

Today she’d planned to give the finished rooms a final once over before taking to the road to buy what she’d bookmarked. Instead, she stood stunned in the ballroom gazing around at the chairs, occasional tables, plush sofas, and artwork. The small stage where musicians would play was set with every instrument a musician could wish for. The ballroom was fully decked out and not by her.

Furiously storming into the great hall to search for the member of her team who’d gone behind her back and taken over her project, Melisandre skidded to a halt. Flags, trumpets, swords, other weaponry hung from high on the walls. Large portraits and landscapes were placed where she’d imagined them, and a vast wooden table sat centred in the hall. It could seat at least thirty people, and her keen eyes picked out where the table could be split to hold extra leaves. It was medieval in design and would have looked at home in any Tudor building.

Several tall cabinets were placed around with long heavy sideboards, and two large candelabras hung over the table. A suit of armour stood in each corner, and wall sconces abounded. Melisandre’s mouth dropped open, someone had snidely taken over her project and was made her look a fool. Her stomach sank in fear and disappointment, whoever it was, was exceptionally good and had shown her up. Tears welled in her eyes, and she blinked them furiously away. Nicholas strode into the great hall and looked around in smug satisfaction.

“Far better,” he muttered, and Melisandre blinked the tears away.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“I had to hunt for them, but now the great hall and ballroom are as I remember,” Nicholas said, his hands on his hips as he glanced around the room. Melisandre’s attention was caught at his words.

“Hunt for them? You had these hidden somewhere?” she asked, suspicion rife in her voice. Nicholas spun around with a look of complete innocence in his eyes.

“Yes, did it slip my mind? When my brother arrived, joyously celebrating my death, I hid everything so when Elias returned, there was nothing left,” Nicholas said angelically. Melisandre’s eyes narrowed, and her

fuse lit.

“For weeks, you’ve watched me struggle to find furniture matching your demands, and you’ve had this hidden somewhere?” Melisandre said slowly.

“It stopped you playing your pranks,” Nicholas said indolently. Melisandre’s mouth opened and shut, and she reached for dignity and found it. Without a word, she turned on her heel and left the hall with her head held high.

That rotten ingrate, Melisandre fumed as she walked towards the gardens. All those hours, sleepless hours, long nights, weekends worked, for nothing.
