… Watches and warnings issued for the Gulf Coast …

At 4 AM CDT … A hurricane watch has been issued from Cameron, Louisiana, westward to Galveston, Texas, and south to Port Mansfield. Hurricane conditions are likely within the watch area by Friday.

Julio has gained strength over the last 12 hours and is expected to become a major hurricane in the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph, with higher gusts.

The storm is moving to the west-northwest at about 10 mph. If it continues to slow, damage could increase exponentially. Heavy rain is expected to lead to widespread flooding.

A mostly west-northwest motion is expected as Julio crosses the central and western Gulf of Mexico. But the storm could take a northward turn as it nears land.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 215 miles.

Coastal storm surge flooding of 3 to 5 feet above normal tides, along with large and dangerous waves, can be expected within the hurricane watch area. Above normal tides are expected along much of the Gulf Coast during the next few days and will increase as Julio approaches.
