Stop! he called, almost aloud, pulling his eyes to just above her head, pinning them to the blackboard framed above her, where the names and pictures of the twenty-four primary children he was trying to memorize were pasted. He tried to listen as Brother Hack, the ward mission leader, was rambling on about the Giffords, a part-member family he was working with. But Sister McInnis’s neck would not leave him alone. It was so . . . so present!

And it wasn’t just Sister McInnis. The other night, it was Sister Wray, the Young Women’s leader. She had caught him in the hall just outside the auditorium on activity night last week.

“Bishop Klaus!”

She was dressed for yoga. The Young Women were having a demonstration from a neighbor of Sister Tanner from the Franklin Ward. The Young Women leader’s hair was tied in a ponytail, and she was dressed in loose T-shirt and grey sweatpants tied in the front. He stared at her in horror. She looked so cuddly. So soft and curvy.

“Bishop Klaus?”

“Sister Wray! What can I do for you?” His eyes locked on hers. He would not look down.

“I need to talk to you.”

She stepped closer. She smelled like baby powder. She said softly, almost whispering, “It’s about Melissa. I think she is in more trouble than we thought. Can I talk to you after Young Women’s? She’s missed the last four activities.”

The bishop allowed concern to bubble into his face. “Yes, of course. Come by after your meeting.”
