âKait?â Walker forced his eyes open and worked to orient himself. âKait.â He sucked in a sharp breath as he tried to sit up. Heâd been tackled plenty of times in football, and none of them had left him this sore.
âHey, you need to take it easy.â
He blinked, and slowly his eyes focused. Flicking his gaze to the window, he found the sun sitting low on the horizon. He brought his attention back to her. âAre you okay?â
Shadows played across her face, but he could see the corners of her lips turn up. The crinkle in her eyes. âIâm fine. How are you feeling?â
âLike I fought a bear.â He grunted a laugh and then cleared his throat.
Walkerâs thoughts returned to the encounter with Murdock. Heâd charged and taken a swipe at Walker. He could still feel the claws raking down his shoulder. The sick feeling of knowing that if he hadnât jumped back, he probably would have been cut in half. While Walker was reeling from the pain and distracted, the bear had taken the opportunity to knock him to the ground.
He'd been dazed for a second. His wits had quickly returned, and heâd realized that if he didnât move, that bear was going to kill him. Fisting his hands in the animalâs fur, heâd worked his way onto Murdockâs back. Hoping that heâd hang on until he tired the animal out. The last thing heâd remembered was a shot ringing out and then nothing but darkness.
âWhat happened? How did I get in the cabin?â
She held up her hands. âHold on. Let me get you some water, okay?â
He nodded. While she was gone, he looked himself over. A wide piece of gauze went from his shoulder to his waist. His forearm also sported some as well. Then he realized when he moved too much, his head and back hurt.
A moment later, she returned and helped him take a big drink. Water had never tasted so good. When the glass was empty, she set it on the floor next to her.
âSoâ¦what happened?â
It was almost like she was debating whether she wanted to tell him.
âCome on. Tell me.â
âI came back to the cabin, grabbed the rifle, and shot Murdock. I kept shooting until he ran away. When I was sure he was gone, I helped you into the cabin.â
His jaw dropped. âYou came back? Shot Murdock?â
Nodding, she replied, âI couldnât just leave you there to die. I had to do something. If I hadnât, he would have killed you.â
âDid you call Noah?â
She shook her head. âI looked everywhere for it and couldnât find the phone.â
Walker squeezed his eyes shut. âI think I forgot to take it out of the coat pocket when I caught Gilbert. It must have fallen out when Murdock attacked. Iâm sorry.â
âItâs okay. Lucky for you, you had a nurse on hand.â She smiled.
He used his free hand to touch the back of his head and winced. âAll I remember is telling you to run.â And the kiss and apology.
