CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Vice
âShe is not the kind of woman that you can toy with,â one of the brothers said. I could already tell them apart, in terms of voice and attitude. Iâd studied the file on them last night so I knew their names by appearance, but the brothers were a complicated puzzle. I was learning quickly. I glanced towards Anastasia who was waiting by our SUV, speaking to absolutely no one.
âI wouldnât do that,â I said quickly.
âYou want her, I can tell.â
I didnât say anything. That was more than obvious. âWantâ was a massive understatement.
âYou have not claimed her,â he observed and I flinched.
âIf she wants me, we will cross that bridge when we come to it,â I said. âIf not, I will protect her to the end of my days.â
Ice blue eyes considered me, then changed. I saw a hint of acceptance. A smile start to crinkle the edges of this cold blue eyes.
âYou are doomed. It is good. It is very funny,â Andrei said, suddenly far more amicable.
He turned to his brothers and make a whipping sound effect and motion. They all laughed. I sensed that they relaxed slightly.
âKroshka has him tied up in knots,â Alexei chortled and climbed into the limo. A town car followed at a discrete distance. I sighed.
âKroshka?â I asked the beauty waiting patiently by the rented SUV.
âAnother nickname. It means little biscuit.â
âBiscuit?â
âCrumb. Of something tasty.â
My eyebrows went right up to my hairline. The nickname suited her but not in the way it had as a child. I wisely chose to say nothing.
I opened the passenger door for her and waited for her to get in. My eyes skimmed her curves. I couldnât help it. But I didnât leer. I couldnât ever leer at her. She was a fine wine, not a cheap beer.
Hell, she was the fanciest, tastiest, finest wine in the whole damned world.
And she was mine. I knew it. I had her in my clutches. Her cousins had come close to giving their approval. I knew they wouldnât kill me.
Not yet anyway.
Not unless I fucked up.
And I would never, ever fuck things up with Anastasia.
âI think this might actually work,â she said, giving me a quick glance. âI donât think they want to drag me back.â
I reached over and squeezed her hand, the other hand on the steering wheel.
âSo, what do you want to do with the rest of your life, Kroshka?â
She let out a startled laugh.
âWe donât know if they will accept my offer.â
âI know.â
âThey could still try to kill you.â
âI know.â
âBut if they donât⦠maybe⦠I could go to college?â
I exhaled sharply. What an ordinary dream. The hope in her voice was nearly my undoing.
âDo you want kids,â I asked gruffly. âMarriage? All that kind of stuff?â
âStuff?â She asked.
âYou know. White picket fences.â
âOh,â she said thoughtfully. I glanced over and she was chewing her lip. A moment later her soft answer made my heart sing. âYes, I think I doâ¦â
âNever thought about it?â
âSometimes but only in an abstract way. I always wanted kids.
