CHAPTER ELEVEN

Being that Uri had mad clientele and her skills as a stylist were above average, she had no issues getting into a shop. Less than a week after she got her cosmetology license, she was renting a booth at a very popular salon. It was owned by a woman that did real estate on the side, and she was married to a man that was a real estate agent as well. They made major bank in real estate, and she brought in good money doing hair too. Melissa was the true definition of a boss. She was twenty-nine with no children, she lived in million-dollar home, and she owned three cars, one of which was a Maserati. She would do two or three clients a day. Then sometimes, she’d be off to show a house or go to a closing. She didn’t sell houses every week, but she had showings often. As soon as Uri met with the woman, she began looking up to her. Melissa was someone that she aspired to be like for sure.

The shop was nice and spacious and aside from Uri and Melissa, the other stylists were Kaliya, Syreeta, and Mercy. Melissa made it known often that she didn’t go for mess in her shop. It was only Uri’s first day, but everyone seemed cool so far. She had plans to mind her business and keep it professional. It would be cool to develop genuine friendships, but they would have to happen organically. She wasn’t pressed to make friends. She was keeping her business to herself and focusing on making no less than $300 a day, and that was only two sew-ins. She could do that easy. Paying booth rent would be new to her, but Uri knew that being in a shop would take her pockets to a new level, so she deemed it a necessary expense.

Uri’s first client of the day was a teenager getting a blowout. She was walking her from the wash bowl back to her station, when she heard Mercy talking to her client. “We gon’ get you right for Cancun, Miss Mamas. Who you going with? Fine ass Dax?”

Uri wanted to look up so bad, but she remained focused on the task of plugging in her hair dryer. She was going to act as if she had no interest whatsoever in their conversation, but she knew good, and damn well, there couldn’t have been that many Daxton’s in the city. Uri knew that when she cut the hair dryer on, she wouldn’t be able to hear, so she moved slow as hell, spraying product on her client’s hair, then gathering all of her supplies.

“Nah, not really. He’s gon’ be there though, and I’m popping up on his ass. He claims he’s going with some niggas, but I’m not stupid. Me and Dax agreed to keep it light while I finished school, but I’ll be finished in four months. If he thinks he’s about to be taking the next bitch on trips and shit, I’m gon’ burst that bubble every time.
