Chapter Twelve
* * *
How is Sunday already here? I slept in past my alarm this morning, and Iâm racing to shave my legs so I can wear a dress to church with Jax.
This past week was busy. Between working extra hours and my first date with Jax, Iâm wiped. Our date was casual, just coffee, but not at Good & Gather. Not that I care what Wes thinks, but I wanted us to have more privacy.
Coffee went well. We talked about our career goals, faith, and what music we likedâcovering all the basics of a first date. After our time together, Jax asked if I would join him for church this Sunday. It feels pretty fast to bring a new girl to your church, but I decide to push out the doubt.
In between the chaos of this week, I still made it into Good & Gather twice. First on Tuesday to grab a coffee on the way into work, which Wes was nowhere to be found. Then again, yesterday to spend my afternoon writing. Finally, I saw Wes again. We talked nonsense for about thirty minutes. He is so easy to talk to. I can understand why customers love coming in to visit him.
Itâs not that a man like Jax doesnât entice me. Rather, the thought of entering another serious relationship terrifies me. The kind of questions he asked, inviting me to church, and talking about what he wants in his future signals he is looking for a serious partner. Jax knows what he wants, and we both sat there at coffee, seeing how well the other person checked off boxes.
I know this because Iâve been here before. But I canât say no to this man. Guys like Jax donât come around often, and he seems to have it all. I canât give up without giving it a proper shot.
Ouch! Oh crap! Blood runs down the back of my knee from shaving. Iâm distracted from my thoughts, and I need to pull it together. I donât want to be late for Jax.
Nothing stands out as I stand in front of my closet. After five different try-ons, my bed is covered in outfits I loved on other days but hate today.
Ping ping. I see Jaxâs name light up my screen right under the exact time he said he would pick me up. Why must he be so on time? Can I ever meet a guy who does not have their shit together and doesnât do what they say theyâll do? I mean, truly, what does a girl have to do to find a guy who runs a couple of minutes late?
Jax: Just pulled in!
Me: Hey! Sorry, running a little late this morning. Give me five minutes.
Jax: K.
K? K with a period? Am I crazy, or does that feel cold? Either way, I donât waste any more time curling my hair and instead pull it back into a low bun. Iâm rushing to assemble myself as much as I can before heading out the door.
