The Plague has Stipulations

“Sonia!” My heart flutters at the sight of my friend. “You’re back!”

“Oh, T, thank you so much. What would I have done if—”

“You have thanked me a hundred times.” And she had. Between her accident and the two times I went to visit her, she had spent half her time thanking me, for nothing.

“Yeah.” Biting her lip, her fingers press at her newly side-parted hair.

“It looks good. Maybe you’ll never go back to the middle.”

She laughs. “I guess it could be worse, right?”

“Always.” I think about Mom home with the nurse. Guilt punches me in the gut, that’s worse. She’s not the same with the nurse. It’s like there’s never a good day. How can I be here at school when Phoebe is gone and Mom is home with a stranger? Phoebe said she’d be back; she didn’t want me missing school for her three or four day absence. And she did come back, for one day, and then she had to leave again. She’s promised to be home tomorrow. But I hope she won’t have to leave again. We need her. She makes our lives easier, no… better, she makes our lives better. Maybe I should tell her that more.

“So,” Sonia says, looking past me. “Is Liam here today?”

“Yeah, I think he’s in English now.” We sit down in our usual desks near the back.

“Have you guys still been eating at our table?”

“Ah, no, we haven’t again. I think it’s a lot for everyone to handle.” And I’d already put Liam through a lot this month.

She nods and holds her hand to her head.

“Hey, are you okay?” I reach out, brushing her arm.

“Yeah,” she says, shaking her head. “Just a headache. I get them sometimes.”

I watch her, wishing Liam were to here to make sure a headache will be all she faces today.
