Another party. Another wasted night. I sit beside his royal-jackassness and pretend not to be bored out of my mind. Every night these parties have gotten worse. Even the men outside in the yard are drinking themselves into stupors and partying so loud it’s as if they’re my own private concert when I’m in my bedroom. Today, however, we have the added benefit of it being a masquerade party. Which means everyone is dressed up in their finest, along with masks that do little to conceal the idiots I’ve grown used to.

As dinner officially wraps up, Maxen stands and shouts over the crowd, “I have a surprise for my loyal subjects! Head to the throne room to keep the fun going!”

Everyone cheers him, and I sigh as I rise. I’m seriously debating heading to bed. The only reason I linger is that I’m determined to find out anything of use to get us the hell out of here, and secondly, Drake is still here, looking sexy as hell in his tuxedo.

As the big doors open, and everyone begins pouring out, Maxen grasps my arm lightly. I hate it. I want to shake him off. But his words threatening Drake still linger between us. I’m by no meaning caving to his will, but I’m also being more careful about openly opposing him.

“Drake!” Maxen calls.

The massive shifter pauses and turns to us. People are still moving all around us, heading for the doors, but Maxen gestures to someone behind us. A second later, two half-naked women saunter up to Drake and wrap their hands around his arms.

“A present for you,” Maxen says, giving a mocking bow.

I can’t tell what Drake is thinking behind his mask, but my heart races.

“Thank you,” Drake tells him, bowing slightly in return.

“Enjoy,” Maxen says, and even his fucking eyes are smug.

My heart breaks a little when Drake turns with the women and heads for the door. I trust Drake. I love him and know he loves me too. Maxen hadn’t left him a choice except for to pretend he wanted the women. Still, seeing him walk away hurt more than I would’ve ever thought.

As we leave the room, I see Drake heading for the stairs leading to our bedrooms, and I long to follow him, but Maxen tugs me along with the rest of the people, heading around the dining hall to the throne room on the other side. There’s drunken laugher and happy shouting as our crowd shuffles along, and I hate every single second of it.

If I had my axes right now...but I don’t. They’re safely tucked away upstairs, and I’m here, far from Adam and Drake. Hating Emory. Alone with the asshole who wants to force me to marry him. And the worst part? I’m starting to feel sorry for myself, and I hate pouting like a helpless child when I could rip a man in half with my bare hands.

Women with that ability didn’t need to pout. They just needed to go on bloody killing sprees.
