“You know, Vincent,” Alex said. “I’ve never paid much attention to my toes before. They’re not unattractive, wouldn’t you say?”

“Quite so, Your Grace,” his valet replied with his usual aplomb. “Shall I fetch a blanket to cover your feet?”

“No,” Alex replied, amused Vincent was concerned about the propriety of Miss Saxton seeing his master’s bare feet propped up on an ottoman. On the other hand, the prospect of a foot massage from his delightful caregiver rendered Alex almost giddy with anticipation. “It never occurred to me before,” he said gleefully. “Look! It’s a miracle I can still wiggle my toes considering the number of bones I broke.”

“Indeed, Your Grace. It’s a wonder you survived at all, and it’s my hope you intend to find out who orchestrated your accident.”

Vincent’s words were a sober reminder. Alex was reasonably certain Derrick was behind the plot to kill him, but it wouldn’t do to accuse a noble relative without proof. “It’s underway, my faithful batman, and it’s only thanks to you we know the truth. In a way, I feel better knowing the incident wasn’t simply ridiculous bad luck.”

“I never did understand how such a thing could happen, Your Grace.”

“Never fear. We’ll ferret out the culprit. Now, show Miss Saxton in, if you please.”

He was so very pleased to see Miss Saxton’s beautiful face when she breezed in, he couldn’t wait to show off his digital prowess. “My toes still work. Watch!”

“Good morning to you, Harrowby,” she replied with a hearty laugh that produced the inevitable result at the crux of his thighs. “Excellent movement, and a good sign there is progress to be made.”

As she plonked herself down on the ottoman and lifted his foot, he thought again about Philip’s idea. Marrying Miss Saxton would solve his problem in the short term, and he could readily accept he was besotted with her. But he doubted she would be enthusiastic about the prospect of sexual congress with a crippled freak. Perhaps if he made it worth her while.
