FAYE

Geoffrey stopped walking, put his hands on his knees, and breathed like he was trying to swallow his own lung. I’d learned as a young’n not to make a to-do when a man showed weakness, so I kept walking and got myself onto the trunk in the cart. Seemed he didn’t appreciate my volunteering him for church attendance, but that wasn’t going to stop me from going. My Daddy always said that God was just as important in a marriage as the bride and groom.

The bishop and his wife seemed nice enough, and welcoming. Uncle Henry seemed satisfied with the proceedings and was ready to get back home. My groom, though, didn’t seem to be taking marriage well. Aside from the look on his face every time he looked my way, for which I was itching to slap him, he’d barely touched my hand and hadn’t even kissed my cheek during the wedding. Now, he couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t imagine how long he’d keep up any of that.

I didn’t normally go around slapping men who looked at me with dazed expressions, but I was fighting my own temper when it came to my husband. I could ignore most of those other men, but I wanted more from my own husband, and I didn’t mind him knowing.

Uncle Henry pounded Geoffrey on the back, almost sending him sprawling. My new husband wasn’t a big man. He wasn’t much bigger than my size. His smooth face made him look more like my son than my husband, but I wasn’t displeased with his looks. Some women liked the massive, rugged type men, like my daddy and Uncle Henry were, but I was finding I was more drawn to what I’d gotten. The only word to describe his face was beautiful. I liked Geoffrey’s thick, dark lashes and hair and strong jawline and lean frame. His nose was straight and brown eyes were kind—when they didn’t look stunned. His mouth was downright pleasing. His hair could use a cut, but had a nice wave to it. He had hefted me up on the cart earlier with ease, and when I’d put my hands on his arms to steady myself, they were corded with muscle. I was used to big, thick men like Daddy and Uncle Henry, so this man was something out of my ordinary.

I suddenly had a hankering to see him bare chested.

Heat blazed across my face like the sun rose from my neck, and I looked away from where Geoffrey walked with Uncle Henry, leading the horse.

“You want to grab something to eat before heading back to the station? My treat.” Uncle Henry talked mostly to Geoffrey, but I knew he was talking to the both of us.

Geoffrey glanced my way to see me nodding. “Thank you, Sir. I can recommend Mrs. Gibson’s place.”

“She won’t mind extra bodies to feed?” I asked.

Another glance my direction, then a shake of his head. “She’ll likely welcome the extra income.”

Seemed this Mrs. Gibson wasn’t a friend of his, but a business owner.
