Chapter Fourteen
Marc was happy with how the meeting had gone with Melinda Wednesday night. They were still trying to write up a contract that both agreed on. Once that was ready, he’d have to meet with the McGregory Medical Supply board of directors to discuss the plans. But as far as he could tell, it was a sure thing. He was so excited about it that he wished he could tell someone about the deal. Actually, there was only one person he wished he could share the news with—Debbie. She’d understand how important this deal was to him and would be excited for him. But he’d promised not to say anything until the deal was signed and made public. It was so hard keeping it to himself.
Mallory called him Thursday about looking at the furniture again, and he told her to come over. He called Debbie to see if she wanted to stop by for a few minutes too, since her shop wasn’t far from his house. The antiques and sofas he’d purchased had arrived the day before and he wanted her to see them.
“I’m not sure I can get away,” Debbie told him, sounding distant. “We’re very busy putting out new merchandise.”
“You have to take a lunch break though. It’s the law,” he said, teasing. “And I’m sure Mallory would like for you to be here.”
He heard Debbie sigh on the other end, although he couldn’t tell if it was a sigh of frustration or giving in. “Fine. I’ll stop by around one. But I can’t stay long.”
When Marc hung up, he wondered why Debbie sounded aloof. He hoped it wasn’t still because of that comment Kyle had made Monday night. He had to talk with Kyle—a long talk—about the way he referred to women. It seemed that Kyle’s behavior had become worse over the years. Or maybe he’d always been that way and Marc hadn’t noticed before. But it had to stop.
Both Debbie and Mallory showed up precisely at one. Marc offered to get them something to drink, but both women declined.
“I brought the moving truck and two helpers,” Mallory said. “I’m sure I’ll want the furniture and decided there was no time like the present.”
Marc laughed. “I like a woman who knows what she wants.”
Debbie remained silent. Marc second-guessed what he’d said to Mallory. Did it sound like he was flirting? Cripes! He should be more careful, or he’ll start sounding like Kyle.
“Would you like to see the furniture Debbie helped me pick out?” Marc asked Mallory.
Her eyes lit up. “Of course. Lead the way.”
They followed him into the dining room where the new hutch stood, then to the den, where the antique desk had been placed. “It’s perfect in here, isn’t it?” he asked, smiling at Debbie.
She nodded. “It is. You have to get the old desk moved out of here, and we should find a rug to place under the desk.”
“It’s beautiful,” Mallory exclaimed, running her fingertips over the polished wood. “Are you going to
