Chapter Five

Meredith read the note three times, and then her phone rang. It startled her bad, and she fumbled to connect the call, thinking it was Tristan. “Hello?”

“Mere?” Summer asked. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. Oh my gosh, this guy scared me in the parking garage and put a note on my windshield and he knows all this stuff about me and I think about you too. Mentioned howling at the moon and stuff. I’m freaking out.”

“I know, I know. Tristan is on his way. He’s talking to Nash right now, and I figured I would call and talk to you while the boys are trying to figure some stuff out.”

“I could be driving to your house right now or something. I don’t like just being parked here.”

“You have to stay there, and Tristan will explain why in person.”

“Why isn’t anyone telling me what’s going on?” Meredith asked.

“Because we can’t do it over the phone,” Summer said softly. “He will tell you everything when he gets there.”

Oooooh. Wait, did that mean her phone was bugged? She had watched tons of crime shows. Now she was freaking out even worse!

“I see Tristan’s truck,” Meredith told Summer.

“Good. I’ll see you soon. Love you, Mere. Everything is going to be okay.”

She hoped so. “Bye, Summer.”

She hung up the phone and got out of her car just as Tristan was backing into the parking space on the other side. She met him at the front of the truck and he stepped out from behind the wheel and was to her in three strides. He picked her up in a hug, crushing her to his chest, and as she clung to him, some of the fear left her. Tristan had a way of making her feel safe, which made no damn sense, because she’d only known him a matter of weeks.

She didn’t care about that stuff right now though. All she cared about was melting into him and escaping this horror that had settled into her bones as she’d read that letter.

He settled her onto the ground and grabbed her hand, led her to the passenger’s side of his truck and opened the door for her, waited for her to get inside. “Wait here,” he murmured.

Meredith watched him make his way to her car, and drop down, and he began inspecting the underside of her Civic. What the heck?

His leather seats creaked slightly as she climbed across the bench seat to get a better look. He seemed to be studying something on her driver’s side. All she could see of him was one of his legs, and the sole of his boot. Tristan stood and looked around the parking lot, his attention hesitating on each car, and every person. His face was stern as he opened the door and grabbed the letter and her purse from the car. He locked it and hopped up inside his truck.

“We can’t leave my car here,” she murmured. “I don’t know this area—”

“There’s a tracking device under your driver’s side door.” He was staring straight ahead, his eyes such a bright and vibrant green, they practically glowed.
