CHAPTER TWENTY

Sadie

I had to admit, it was nice to hear from her again. I really had been worried about her and then there were the rumors going around town. One more thing I loved about small town living... if you do anything at all, they all know about it within minutes.

I still couldn’t believe that she went to Hunter’s place and climbed up on the mail truck. I could totally see her. That purple jacket of hers with the matching gloves, hood up and that red curly hair sticking out the sides trying to cover her face. It was bitter cold still, so her glasses would’ve fogged up when she breathed on the window to see in. Her forehead was probably plastered to the driver’s side door when the chief caught her.

She wasn’t wrong, though; he would be keeping a closer eye on her after that. What I didn’t understand was why he was asking Karen if she’d seen his nephew. If he didn’t know what was going on, then why wasn’t he looking into it more? If someone in my family was missing and I wasn’t sure what was happening and I had the town breathing down my neck, I wouldn’t be just sitting around waiting to see what happened or if he turned up. But the chief wasn’t us, and he could be lazy. There were rumors going around about him too. I’d heard since I moved to town that he was a drinker. Danika told me, after I’d been there for only a week, that she’d seen him passed out at the bar in the next town over more than once. Ben even called the state troopers to come and bust him when he drove home drunk almost running Ben’s car off the road. Not that it did him any good. Cops seem to stick together, even when they’re wrong.

At least Karen was excited about me helping her again. When she wouldn’t even open my message—she still hadn’t—I thought that was it, and I blew any chance I had at being friends with her. In a way, both of us had been wrong, and we jumped to our own conclusions instead of listening to each other. A mistake we wouldn’t make again. Meeting up with her later that afternoon, I tried to brainstorm some ways we could get them to listen to us.

She wasn’t really feeling the kidnap story, but I thought it was the best one. What else would get the cops to investigate things faster than saying Patrick had Hunter locked up on his property somewhere? It was obvious that the chief didn’t know where he was.

I pulled out a piece of paper to write things down when I stumbled on the list from Jarred Owens. The Animal Control Officer had been harder on me that last visit than he had any other time. Nothing in my kennel was dirty, missing, or broken. All the dogs were current on shots, fixed, and had the meds they needed.
