It was the soft whisper of feet sinking into the sand that woke Nari. He knew it wasn’t Semyon because he could feel the man’s body pressing up against his own. And it certainly wasn’t him. He was lying down.

That meant someone else was inside the cave.

Nari was almost afraid to open his eyes—afraid that the bandits had returned and afraid that whoever was inside the cave with him and Semyon wasn’t there to help them.

“I know you are awake, little one,” drawled a deep voice that was as intriguing as it was powerful. “Your breathing has changed.”

Nari swallowed past the lump of fear in his throat and slowly opened his eyes. The man squatting beside him was as surprising as the gentle tone he used when speaking. He wasn’t dressed as someone Nari would have thought a soldier would look like, but he didn’t dress like an outlaw either.

Despite the easy smile on the man’s face, when he reached a hand out, Nari cringed back against Semyon. He didn’t know this man. It didn’t seem right to allow the touch no matter how friendly the guy was trying to act.

And it was an act. Nari could see the dark, piercing golden eyes of a predator staring back at him. “Who are you?” Nari asked.

The man’s smile broadened until his white teeth gleamed in the low morning light shining in through the cave entrance. “I am your new master.”
