CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Yuri
I take the guns from the table and start strapping them to my holsters as I have done every day since I turned fifteen and hear my wife walk in.
âDo you ever go anywhere without a weapon?â
âNo.â I adjust my holster. âHow do you feel about carrying one? You did pretty well at the range yesterday.â Her nose scrunches up. âYou will always have protection, but sometimes the fight comes to you, and I donât like the idea of you being unarmed.â
âIâve spent twenty-nine years without a gun, so I should be okay.â
âBut now youâre an heiress and my wife. The Triad doesnât distinguish between men and women, nor do the Cartels.â
âAre you trying to frighten me to death?â
Leaning down, I cup her face. âI want you to be aware of the world you now inhabit.â Her eyes cloud with worry, and as guilty as I feel for it, I donât regret it. She needs to understand the circumstances have changed irrevocably, and returning to civilian life is impossible. Not just because of who I am but because of her family fortune.
âI will be careful, Yuri.â
âAnd Fedor and Yvgeny will not leave your side.â I kiss her lips quickly and then slide my jacket on. âDo you have any plans today?â
âOther than cowering in a corner and praying that no one enters the building with guns blazingâ¦no.â
âBe sure to stretch every thirty minutes because cowering can be hell on your back.â She sticks her tongue out and then laughs. âI will probably be home late tonight. We have business out of town.â
Standing, she straightens my tie. âHow far out of town? Are we talking Deerfield or Brazil?â
âNo planes today.â
âHow very illuminating.â Shaking her head, she leans over and opens a basket beside her coffee cup. âHopefully, you wonât need this.â She holds up a white handkerchief. âI didnât have time to do anything more than a simple monogram.â
Taking the white cloth, I feel my heart expand. âThis is beautiful.â Running my finger over our initials, I swallow. âThank you.â
âThe next ones will be nicer.â
I tuck it into my pocket and kiss her head. âCall Fedor if you need anything.â
âHave a good day, husband.â
âThank you, wife.â
Striding out the door, I tell myself that this will all feel normal before too long, and the knot in my chest will go away.
I hit the button for the elevator and remind myself that no one can get inside the building and my wife will be perfectly safe.
