Ugly Babies

“Are ya sure you wanna see ‘em? Piglets is ugly babies.”

Suzie Boyd thought about what Willard Sprock had just told her. He told her that overnight his big sow had given birth to a whole bunch of squealing piglets. Of course she wanted to see the piglets, but Willard was such a strange boy that he made her feel a trifle uncomfortable. Suzie had come into town to get some penny candy and when she left the General Store and turned down an alleyway to get home, she ran right smack into Willard. She didn’t know too much about him other than that he had a partially deformed left leg from birth that made him drag it along the ground as he walked; kind of a shuffle-walk. He was tall and thin, with sandy blonde hair and big blue eyes. Suzie thought he was actually pretty good looking, even with the limp. The more she thought it over, the more she wanted to go walking with Willard. She was fourteen now and her ma and pa would be letting her step out with boys soon. She might as well get to know one a little.

“Hey, I can’t wait all day. You wanna see 'em or not?” Willard asked, with a little annoyance creeping into his drawl, as he scratched at his bad leg.

“Okay. I’m not expected home right away. Let’s go see the cute little babies!” Suzie was excited because she loved any baby animals. She knew that piglets were especially fun to play with when they were little, but she hadn’t held one since she was nine.

The pair of them continued to walk down alleyways, like most kids who wanted to avoid nosy adults, and emerged at the outskirts of town where they started on a sun-drenched path that led through the tall grass toward the Sprock family farm. Suzie knew little about the Sprocks. She knew that they were not well liked around town and often heard whispered rumors about how terrible they were. She had never heard anything too damning though and was a bit thrilled that such a good looking boy, even though he was a cripple, would talk to her.

They walked in silence around a few bends and over a few short hills before Suzie decided to start some conversation.

"How old are you, Willard?"

"Seventeen."

"I rarely see you in town. What's your family like?"

Willard turned his face away and it was a few awkward moments before he finally spoke.

"I have a ma, but pa is dead. I have me a twin brother too. Some distant relatives in Pennsylvania, but no others."

"Oh, you have a very small family then. It must be hard to run your farm. Do you have to do most of the work?"

"Yeah . . . ," Willard seemed to wince, "I have to do everything. It's terrible too. My ma can't get up no more now and my brother is crippled too so that leaves just me. I hate it too!"
