Maray
Marayâs neck gave an uncomfortable sting as it snapped back into the cushions.
âHeck!â Jeminâs voice sent a shockwave of horror through Marayâs system.
She rolled to her side, dreading the look of disappointment in Heckâs chocolate eyes, and swallowed the moment sheâd just shared with Jemin. What had gotten into her?!
As she scrambled to her feet, she avoided touching Jemin who was already upright, and she slid off the bed as if sliding down a slope of guilt. It was there, already heating her cheeks and making her heart burn with remorse.
However, when she met Heckâs gaze, disappointment was the last thing she found there.
âHeck,â she repeated Jeminâs assessment of her visitor.
âI thought Iâd check in,â he explained awkwardly. âBut I see youâre already in good hands.â
Maray couldnât tell if the joking tone was real or if he was simply hiding his displeasure with the scene heâd walked in on behind a so well-practiced grin.
âI apologize, Heck,â Jemin took Marayâs words and spoke them before she had a chance. âI swear I didnât mean to.â
Heck strode over and launched himself into a blue armchair. âNobody ever means to.â
âIâm so sorry, Heck.â Maray observed him while he beamed at them as if he had won the lottery. âWhatâs wrong, Heck?â she asked, unable to shake the feeling there was something bad boiling under the shiny surface. The talk theyâd had about postponing the wedding was still fresh on her mind. Her request had obviously hurt Heckâhis pride. They both knew they didnât have romantic feelings for each other. But Heckâs sacrifice had brought them closer. Their friendship had changed, and had he once even suggested an in-name-only marriage, Maray wasnât sure he would have been able to follow through with it. It would have been smarter to talk about it with Heck before letting her hormones take over, and then, Jeminâs visit had been a surpriseâ
Beside Maray, Jemin was fingering his collar back into place.
âWrong?â Heck laughed out loud as if Maray had made a really good joke. âThatâs the thing.â He folded his hands in his lap and leaned forward, elbows resting on his thighs. âThere is nothing wrong with thisâliterally nothing.â He pointed at himself with one thumb without straightening. âExcept for me.â
Maray was staring at Heck so intently that she felt her eyes were burning from lack of blinking. Even Jemin seemed petrified by Heckâs mysterious statement.
âMe,â Heck repeated with a laugh. âI am wrong in this scene.â He gave Maray a sideways glance before his eyes wandered to scrutinize Jeminâs face.
Maray followed his gaze and found Jemin devastated by Heckâs behavior.
âYou donât get it,â Heck assumed. âI am the last person to disapprove of the two of you getting it on. Just let me know next time you want to be alone together so I donât need to burn my memory to cleanse it of the sight of Jemâs naked butt.â
Heck seemed to find himself amusing as he spoke. It rang in every syllable of his words, and Maray had a difficult time believing this was all he had to say to finding them in flagrante.
