Chapter Twenty-Six

Gabe

Raimo is trying to calm Maia down. He’s pulled her deeper into the forest so that it can soothe her as he explains. I trail them, leaving behind the chaos as the tribe sorts out all the revelations.

“So, she’s really human? Like, one day we’ll be like that?” Maia’s words come out slow. She’s processing and getting over her shock.

“I doubt all humans can access that kind of power. And not everyone has the genes for all five elements. Plus, Goddess Ari has been wielding magic for over a thousand years.”

She shivers, and I can relate. Human or no, it’s disconcerting to see someone dissolve into water.

Raimo perches on a rock and Maia follows suit. I give them their space, the peace of the forest settling into me.

Silence ensues and I figure he’s giving her time to digest it all when he says, “Do you know what Raimo means in Estonian?”

“Smartass?”

He laughs. “Close. It’s actually ‘wisdom.’ And my last name, Tamm, means Oak tree.” He leans close to her, like he’s sharing a secret. “A very wise tree.”

“Well, Maia means magic in Sanskrit, and brave in Maori. And in Roman mythology, she’s the goddess of spring growth.”

He chuckles again. “Those suit. It means ‘Mother’ in Greek, though. That’s what most people would think when they hear your name.”

“You’d make a wonderful mother,” I pipe in, sending her a wave of honest praise for her devotion and protectiveness. I can’t tell in this light if I’ve made her blush, but I feel her glowing inside.

“Yeah, why are we having this conversation?” she says, outwardly embarrassed.

“Because I know about Roy,” Raimo answers.

Maia stiffens, and a shock wave of alarm pulses to me.

“I Saw your problem, and knew you’d have to make a choice. I’m hoping you’ll hear me out, if not because I’ve earned your respect, then maybe because I’m a wise Seer.” His words come out with a thicker accent, more melodious and softer.

She’s on guard, muscles primed and ready to bolt, but his revelation actually helps me relax. Someone else is aware and is looking out for her.

“Don’t worry, I didn’t tell anyone else. Just because you know something doesn’t mean you have to share it. My spark is knowledge, but that doesn’t make it wisdom. The wisdom is what I do with that knowledge.” ‘Worry’ and ‘wisdom’ sound like ‘vorry’ and ‘visdom.’

He grips her hands; they flop lifelessly—she’s still frozen. “Your spark allows you to be a potential weapon in this war. That doesn’t mean you have to kill.”

“You keep me in the dark about your leader, and about what you know about me, and expect me to listen to any of your advice?” Her gaze slices to me before returning to Raimo and continuing, “Your name might mean ‘wise’ but that was pretty fucking stupid. Are you sure you translated that right? I think you meant ‘arrogant’. And I hate arrogant men.”

I edge closer.

“Maia, there’s a bigger enemy,” he goes on, unruffled. “Life is more than what you see and judge.
