Chapter Nineteen

A cluster of blue circulates a few meters away. From his crouched position, I sense Yves is going to shift.

I hold my hand out to him. “Stop, Yves! It’s okay. This one is with me.”

Yves’s expression is tortured as he hesitantly stares at the blue figure.

“Archangel Gabriel, it’s so good to see you.”

Yves glances at me out of the corner of his eye. His survival instinct is screaming at him to leave, the torture of deciding what to believe clear on his face.

I smile at him only to have the gesture returned with a whispered, “Archangel?”

I nod. “Yes. Archangel Gabriel. One of my true friends.”

The crackling of sticks and leaves grows closer as the archangel rushes toward me. “Oh, sweetie. How did you get into this mess?” Warm hands brush the skin of my neck as the archangel pulls at the clasp.

I tilt my head to the side, giving them a more unobstructed view. “This is my mother’s side of the family. Clearly, an open welcome.” Sarcasm drips from my voice.

Archangel Gabriel pulls at the cuff, and it chafes my skin. “How come you haven’t shape-shifted and gotten out of this brace?”

“Somehow, this shackle dulls or restricts my shape-shifting abilities. It’s specially designed so they can capture the shape-shifters and restrain them. Once they capture shape-shifters in this brace, the shape-shifters can’t escape, and the witches can persecute them.”

Archangel Gabriel’s mouth drops open with disbelief, and I nod.

“Yves tried to undo the brace but hasn’t succeeded.”

Both of Archangel Gabriel’s soft, dainty hands clasp the brace around my throat. They close their eyes and frown, deep in concentration.

Hissing reaches my ears over the crackling of the fire, and I glance over the flames. I gasp. Several witches approach, their arms poised and ready to strike.

“Oh no,” I whisper, pulling my energy from its source and directing it at the shuriken.

Archangel Gabriel’s hands drop the brace around my neck, and they huff. “These witches need to be taught a lesson.” Strange malice edges their voice as they flick their dainty hands at the witches. Suddenly, the witches shoot into the sky, hovering several feet high without their brooms. They are quite some distance away, yet I’m sure horror is plastered on their faces as they hover helplessly in the air.

One of the witches circles her arms as though winding up a spell, and I pull on the shuriken with my magic, ready to retaliate.

“Nuh-uh-uh.” Archangel Gabriel shakes a finger at them. “If you shoot any of us, then I will let you fall, and you won’t have your brooms to catch you.”

The witch’s face turns pale and expressionless, too scared to show any other emotion, then she drops her arms limply at her sides.

“You may be witches,” Archangel Gabriel says. “But you can’t fly without your brooms.” The archangel gazes around the cabins and seems satisfied when they find the campground empty. “Now, I can see you haven’t given this young lady a warm welcome, so I’m taking her away with me.
