CHAPTER 18

The Neon House is exactly as I remember as I weave through the people crowding the dance floor. Adrian wraps his hands around my waist and pulls me against him. We move to the beat, and the man definitely knows what he’s doing on the dance floor, but I can’t let myself get too distracted.

I also can’t let him figure out why I requested to come here tonight, because he’ll take me right back to the penthouse.

Now that the human auras are visible to me without the added neon lights, I watch the other dancers carefully. The humans aren’t why I’m here tonight. They’re just the bait.

The nephilim are my mark.

If Cameron was right, then the energy demons, also known as the nephilim, frequent this nightclub. And if that’s true, I’m hoping to find someone who can get me in contact with Chloe. All I need is one conversation with someone in her world who has her phone number. I don’t need to see Chloe in person to ask her to visit me in a dream, and I actually would prefer not to.

Adrian and I dance for an hour before I finally catch sight of a nephilim. The woman appears to be in her early twenties, is dressed in a silver halter top and tight jeans, and is dancing between two eager-looking men. She’s also siphoning off energy from their auras. It swirls around her in a haze of blues and oranges.

I force myself not to stare, but the confirmation of my time in Faerie hits me upside the head for what feels like the tenth time since I’ve returned.

They did something.

Because those two weeks went missing from my mind, and I came back here with access to my angelic gift without needing to feed on human emotion. Every time I’ve been around humans, I haven’t felt a desire to steal from their auras, and I think it’s because my gift is already well-fed. If I can figure out what the fae did, then maybe I can help the other nephilim do the same.

But what if they already know?

Because Chloe said there was a way to feed without hurting humans. She was going to tell me, but then Camilla sent her away. And then when we were at the Christmas party, Uncle Dario said nephilim have broken into factions, that the most powerful families fight amongst themselves. Could it be because some nephilim know there’s a way to feed without hurting humans but they still choose to do it anyway?

My mark breaks away from the two men and heads to the bathroom, giving me my opportunity.

“I have to pee,” I yell to Adrian.

He’s not necessarily possessive, but he’s protective as hell, so I’m not surprised when he walks me off the dance floor and all the way to the bathroom door. Before I go in, he’s already casing the hallway, his eyes roaming every corner like he’s searching for any possible threats.

“I swear, if you try to follow me into the women’s bathroom, I’ll scream.
