Chapter 16

Mila

The day of the tournament arrives with a nip in the air but the sun bright in the sky. Ondrun was right, the snow didn’t stick to the ground but it was pretty to watch the flakes fall around us as we walked back to the city. Now we’ve arrived at the gates of Spheongand and I’m excited for what the day will bring. This journey was meant to help me heal and close the door on the demons of my past. I was skeptical after visiting the caves, but now here I am, traveling in Kindrul’s food truck with him, sitting next to Ondrun, almost giddy at what I’m about to see at this alien festival. I’ve come to believe that Ondrun is a master of distraction.

We stop and get in the line of vehicles waiting to gain access into the city. From behind the windows in the large truck, the pointed golden bars that make up the border gates stretch toward the sky, shimmering when the light shines on them just right. For anyone passing by, I must look like a child with her nose pressed against the glass, ogling everything like it’s a shiny new toy. Even knowing what I must look like doesn’t stop me, though. It’s like a scene straight from a science fiction movie but on steroids.

“I can only imagine what’s going through your head right now,” Ondrun says, leaning closer so he can look out the window with me.

“Just taking it all in. It’s probably silly but I didn’t expect Spheongand to be so different from Millvein. Where I’m from, I can drive from city to city in my home state and things all look the same. The same restaurants, same movie theaters, same stores. This is all really different.”

“Spheongand is independent from the rest of the regions. They only open their gates for outsiders every once in a great while…this festival being one of those occasions.”

“Is that why the long wait to get through the gates?”

“Exactly. The guards are doing thorough checks of the vehicles and patrons before they’ll be allowed in. Security has always been tight in the city.”

“I suppose they need to take precautions when they’re inviting all of the best warriors from all over the region on the same day into their city.”

“It is wise of them to be smart about it.” Ondrun reaches over and brushes my hair off of my shoulder, his fingers touching the bare skin of my neck in the process. Goosebumps break out over my skin and I immediately grow flustered from our close contact. I can sense his desire to kiss me just like yesterday when we stood together in the trees as the first snowflakes of the season fell around us.

I think my desire is the same but what if I’m wrong? We’ve been spending so much time together it’s possible I’m confusing the feelings of our friendship as something more. I’ve come to depend on him in this short time
