Other valuable sources are the London Gazette, which has been published since 1665 (partial indexes to 1786; complete thereafter), containing official court and government announcements such as naturalisations, changes of name and bankruptcies. The Gentleman’s Magazine (indexed) was published monthly from 1731–1868 and is valuable for announcements of births, marriages and deaths, bankrupts and military appointments in the middle and upper classes. The obituaries can be long and include ordinary people if they were in any way remarkable. Sir William Musgrave’s Obituary prior to 1800 (Harleian Society, Vols 44–9) includes many death announcements culled from other sources.
