Chapter Nine

I’m Really Your Boss

“Hello?”

Torren answered his phone on the first ring. He hadn’t heard from her all day and believed Kha’rin was more upset about what happened at Sunday dinner than he thought she was at first. He sagged in his office chair when he heard her voice.

“Hey, it’s me. I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier,” she sighed. “Things have been crazy.”

“Is everything okay?” Torren asked. “Work was fine?”

“Oh, yeah. It didn’t have anything to do with work.” She hesitated on the other end. Torren leaned forward in his chair, waiting for her to continue. He had the feeling this wasn’t going to be good.

“Chris’s mother passed away.”

Torren thought for a moment. Chris. The name sounded familiar, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Then the name registered.

“Wait, that fucker that beat you almost to death?” He stood and began pacing. “That son of a bitch?”

Everything in him wanted to go back in time, find that motherfucker, and beat the shit out of him. Even now, he itched to inflict pain on him. When he first met Kha’rin, she was black and blue. Bruises covered her body because of that guy. He didn’t know her then, yet he wanted to avenge her. As they became closer, the more he listened and consoled her, his blood boiled every time he heard the guy’s name. He’d flown off the handle more than once when he saw her bloodied and battered, but she begged him to let it go. Letting it go was the last thing he wanted to do, but he respected her wishes.

When Kha’rin finally decided to leave the asshole, Torren was the one who helped her get her shit out of his house, comforting her as she packed her things. He’d become her confidant as time passed. She told Torren everything. Just thinking about it pissed him off.

“Calm down, Torren. Despite what Chris did, Ms. Brenda was good to me,” she explained.

Torren understood, but to him, this was an opening for this dude to slide back into her life. He’d be damn if he let that happen.

“Look, can we meet a little later?” she asked. “I want to help out here.”

He knew he wouldn’t change her mind because that lady really had been good to her. Kha’rin used to tell him how she reminded her of her grandmother. Torren understood the connection. But that didn’t mean he liked it. This time, he would relent. He was already on thin ice with her.

“Okay, I’ll cancel the reservations, and we can order in. Come to my place when you leave.”

“I will. I’ll talk to you later, Torren.”

She ended the call.

Yeah, there was no need to push that issue right now. Not when there was tension. Fuck, he hated his family sometimes. But he’d do what she asked for now. Torren pushed his concerns out of his mind and returned to his paperwork. He planned to call a meeting at work this week to reveal who he really was, but he needed to discuss it with Kha’rin.
